I had lunch here last week with a couple of co-workers and I had the opportunity to try their sushi buffet. What a novel idea! And a tasty one too! I was very pleasantly surprised by the various types of sushi available and I tried nearly every one. Needless to say, I will definitely be going back.
No Buffet for you!. Taking cues from the soup Nazi, Totto is equally as accomdating. Called just after 2, was told the buffet was going until 3 by the female that answered the phone. Drove the 20 minutes, paid for parking, Showed up at 2:35 and was told by Jake, our waiter that they stop serving the buffet at 2:30. We told Jake that the sushi bar looked fine as it was and that we didn’t want the chefs to go out of their way to make anything extra, there were at least a dozen platters or more mostly full. Jake told us that he was sorry, but that the staff would eat the leftover sushi and that it was not available to us. We were disappointed that the full bellies of the staff were more important than satisfied customers, but we’d already driven, paid for parking and were there so we ordered a couple sushi plates. We watched as one of the four other people in the restaurant returned to get a plate from the sushi bar, which looked delicious. At 3 o’clock several staff members took platter after platter of sushi back into the kitchen, then came back out, filled their plates, and sat down to eat. Even after that there was enough sushi left sitting on the bar to feed me, my friend and probably a few other people. All in all the sushi we did get tasted fine, and I left half full. Luckily the coffee shop down the street had a snack for dessert. I don’t think I will be returning to Totto.
Horrible weekday lunch service; complete waste of time. Went there for lunch with a co-worker and knowing that the place gets slammed at noon, we went at 11:30 to beat the rush. Hit the sushi buffet, get a few pieces and roll back to the office within an hour. Simple plan, right? Wrong. When we arrived, the place was already packed, most notably by four tables pushed into one long table so a party of 12 or so can enjoy a nice, leisurely lunch. Every time the chefs finished up a tray for the buffet, this party would descend upon it like flies on a corpse. I was told that any orders I placed would take 45 minutes to an hour before they would be ready. I’m on my lunch break so that’s not an acceptable turn around time for *any* restaurant during lunch hour. But by this time, anyplace else is going to be busy. So my co-worker ordered some teriyaki chicken (I’ve had it, it’s nothing special) and I ordered some miso soup and decided to roll the dice on waiting on the buffet. We should have walked out right then and there. The buffet area was never more than half-stocked at best because they couldn’t turn around food fast enough to satisfy that one party. At one point one of the chefs asked if I was waiting on an order. I said no, I’m waiting on some from salmon the buffet. He didn’t acknowledge me, he just went back to unwrapping prepared sushi rolls for the next wave. Our server refilled our drinks once, never bothered to ask if we’d like to place an order. They obviously didn’t care.We motioned for our server three times to bring us our bill. Three times he sees us and three times he ignored us. After the third time, we dropped a few bucks on the counter and walked. We didn’t care if it was enough, they’d wasted our time. None of us from our office are going back there again.Pro-tip for the owners: when you have a party of a dozen people who make 4-5 trips to the buffet and fill their plates each run, and you can’t keep up? You’re losing money because you’re not turning tables around quickly and you’re alienating other customers. Totto Sushi & Grill is too small to be a buffet place. And if you’re a large party and you want a lazy buffet, stick to the Ryan’s or a China Buffet out in Hixson.
I’ll pass. As an employee of this company just starting up these owners completely disrespect all American staff, they take 25 percent of all tips and hold the remaining amount for days. While working their I seen alcohol sold by people under 18 and was constantly told that everything I was doing was wrong. I have 4 years experience working in a Japanese sushi bar and hibachi grill and worked with all kinds of Asian people. Never have I been treated like such a child by people. They take your cell phone from you and will not let servers talk to each other or to guests and do simple table talk. If you are asked a question by a table they interject and tell them your busy working. It’s completely assinine. I will not eat here as I do not put my money where all their workers are treated like dogs and disrespected on a daily basis. There food may be alright for buffet grade sushi but it is not fine dinning and it is not authentic.
Changing for the Worse. I have ate hear about 10 times for dinner and always been pleased. Tonight however, that all changed. Seated and placed orders at 7:30 PM. At 8:15 waiter came by to finally fill drinks and apologize for wait (about 15 people in restaurant). About ten minutes later he brings sushi one guest ordered. Said he would be back with rest. Does not return for another 10 minutes. I looked at my scallops and they were only cooked on one side. Other guest ordered steak and noodles, med rare. The steak is visably burned (seriously black and crunchy). We point it out to the waiter. Apolized and wanted to know if he could get us more steak…would take 10 min. We declined. I bit into my veggies and they were cold…same as my rice. I stop manager and explain and she wants to cook another round if food. We can’t because of commitment and explain this. She becomes visably irritated and rude. We get the bill and it is all full price with no offer of discount. I hate to say it, but I won’t go back. I will miss the peach shrimp.
There sushi is extremely overpriced for being extremely mediocre. I got two different rolls and they were both pretty gross, also expensive.
