It has been a few years since I last visited Cafe Lola. I’m not really sure why it has been that long, because I have always enjoyed it. Today was no exception. I was with my 11 year old daughter and it was her first time. She loved the atmosphere and the food. My food was also delicious. The service was also very good. The prices are a little above average, but so is the atmosphere, quality, and service. We will definitely return soon.

Dinner Foods. I have dined here many times with friends and family. We have always had excellent service and have always been more than happy with our dinners. I do not drink so I cannot comment on the bar menu. I always go to Lola’s for my special occasions so it rates #1 in JC as far as my satisfaction is concern.

Great restaurant. One of the best in Johnson City. Can’t go wrong!

Masquerades as a nice restaurant. After reading all the great reviews, my fiancee and I were excited to try this place. We started off with drinks. The drink menu looked nice, and had some cocktails that are hard to find anywhere in the Tri-Cities. I even found one of my favorite drinks of all time, a Hemingway daiquiri, and so ordered one. My fiancee ordered a sidecar. Since we were sitting in the bar area, I watched the bartender make it up. The first thing I noticed was that my Hemingway daiquiri was red (The drink is supposed to be white with maybe a hint of pink.). I thought for sure that was a drink for someone else. When they got to the table we tried them and both looked at each other thinking the same thing. I realized my drink had been made with the syrup from a maraschino cherry jar, not the maraschino liqueur (which is clear and tastes nothing like cherries) called for in the recipe for a Hemingway daiquiri. My fiancee’s sidecar was almost entirely lemon juice. Neither drink had hardly any alcohol in it. For such expensive drinks, I not only expected a decent pour of alcohol, but for them to also make a quality drink. These drinks tasted like something my roommate from college would make with the leftovers from the previous night’s party. When the food came out, we expected it might make up for the drinks. I ordered the vegetable curry, and my fiancee got the quiche of the day. The curry sauce was way too sweet. It tasted more like a spicy dessert sauce than curry. Additionally, the vegetables were undercooked (to the point where the carrots and zucchini were still crunchy) and cold. My fiancee’s salad came with a poppy seed dressing that I am pretty sure we have bought before at Kroger. The one moderately redeeming thing was the quiche, and by that I mean it tasted good when compared to everything else, but even that got burnt a little on the edges and was way too salty. If i had to describe this restaurant to somebody, I would tell them that it is a place that pretends to be a nice restaurant. It has the look, but not the substance. If I were you, I would save your money for somewhere else.

Quality and Good Prices. For the outstanding meal we enjoyed, the cost was surprisingly low. Very personal, attentive service. We will definately be back.

Brunch. I was really excited to try the brunch here (brunch is my favorite meal!) but I have to say I was a bit disappointed. I ordered the crab benedict special, and it was not exactly what I was expecting. It was basically a crab cake on an english muffin. It wouldn’t have been so bad if it weren’t for the near raw onion strewn throughout the crab cake. I basically ate the poached egg and muffin minus the crab cake…However, I was pleased with the service and the eggs were poached well (not overcooked). Good coffee too 🙂 If I had ordered the regular eggs benedict instead I might be writing a more positive review right now.I plan to go back for dinner to try some of the tapas menu and check out the wine list/cocktails. After spending a semester in spain, I enjoy finding restaurants that embrace this style of dining. I have high hopes for redemption!
