Highly Disappointed. My family and I visited for lunch yesterday after finding this restaurant listed in an article of Tennessee’s best restaurants and reading good reviews online. The atmosphere is nice, the employees are pleasant, and the baked goods in the front looked great. The menu is eclectic, but not in a good way. Nothing on the menu really stood out and I was disappointed that the specials of the day did not sound promising. I ended up ordering a small Lucy sandwich with a side of blue corn chips. My husband ordered a calzone with mushrooms and pepperoni. Both of my children ordered quesadillas on whole wheat tortillas.I understand that I ordered a small sandwich, but I wasn’t expecting a slider, which is exactly what I got. Little, itty bitty sandwich. I don’t have a huge appetite, but it took effort to keep my jaw from dropping when it arrived at the table. On top of that, the portobello and all other toppings minus walnut were scant- it’s a good thing the bun was good, because that’s essentially what my sandwich consisted of. The blue corn chips were tasty but served plain- no hummus, salsa, bean dip, etc. Just plain chips. No garnish. My husband received a good-sized calzone with decent crust. Thank goodness the waitress had earlier asked if my he would like extra sauce on the side for dipping, because it was pretty much nonexistent inside the calzone. As was the pepperoni, which was not included at all. He picked and poked at it throughout the meal. The quesadillas were extremely plain and unceremoniously dumped on the plate. Neither one was interested in finishing them.Nothing served was terrible. Nothing required being sent back, even the calzone that was missing ingredients. But it was not good, and it certainly was anything but great. Not worth a return trip.

EDIT 7/10/2015: So, finally returned to this location to give them another try. I am so glad that I gave them another try. They get an A+, and the other couple who came with us loved it also. Awesome restaurant and I love the fact that everything was fresh. Service was A+. Definitely nothing negative to say. Now to figure out how to adjust my negative to a positive. A head’s up to Tomato Head for reaching out to me the last time and assuring me that my experience was not normal. Because they were interested in my feedback, I was more than willing to return. Definitely recommend!PREVIOUS: Hmmm….. I wish I could say I loved this place, but I can’t. We didn’t even make it in to place an order. We did go and put our name on this list. We were told it was to be a 20-25 minute wait, and if we would like to leave our phone number and they would text us when our table was ready. We never received a text. We saw many people arriving and were seated, while we waited outside (because it was crowded inside). Personally, if you are going to offer a service, please follow through with it. Rather than going inside and confronting them, we opted to go to another restaurant, where we were seated immediately and received spectacular service. Btw…never did get that text message.

We have enjoyed the food at this establiment for quit some time. I am very supportive to local family owned businesses in this area. It is good food at a reasonable price. I want to thank the owners for sticking with it in the various turbulations that have accored in Knoxville and the fact that they have persevered shows that small buisness can prevail in these times. Thank you for the good food and good times! Wish there was a way we could bring back Sun Down In The City. Your place fit so well in such an environment.

Food was good but we waited exceptionally long to be seated . Keep In mind there were only 15-20 people inside the place. Service overall was lacking and we felt ignored from the entire time. I won’t visit this location again.

Awful Waffles. Great service…however my waffle at brunch last Sunday was lacking. Just a basic, mediocre waffle for like 8 bucks. I could have totally heated up the same thing in my toaster oven for a better deal. Also the fruit portions were totally ridiculous when I can pay the same amount for more fruit at the Bistro, which also happens to have better food. Don’t believe everything you read. It’s basically just mediocrity served under the guise of organic, local food.

Great. Tomato Head is certainly the best restaurant in Knoxville (both the one downtown and the one on Kingston Pike). The service is relaxed and friendly, the food is always fresh and tasty, and they have specials which are more and more inventive. Their salads are great (have the chef salad, with delicious ham and smoked turkey), their pizza is delicious and their breakfast food is also great (Belgian waffles and home fries . mmmm). Some unique and awesome soups too. Their cookies are super good… Very professional service and cooking, always fresh, good and inventive… Waiters always try to accommodate and you have a lot of freedom. The prices are super affordable too for great quality. What would we do without Tomato Head in Knoxville?
