service and hospitality are great these people make you feel welcomed and as if they have known you forever, the only reason I am rating it 3 stars; is the food. yes, Colombian food yummm; but the problem I have with the food here is the following; when they first opened the food was incredibly well-seasoned platters and everything was delicious, but as time has gone by the quality of the food has diminished. the popularity has gone up, the place has expanded but every time I go maybe I just catch them on an off day but they are slow; that only tells me one thing food quality is going down. last 2 times Ive gone and ordered my favorite platter La Bandeja Paisa, I have been disappointed. sure enough the flavors arent there anymore no seasoning what so ever yes packed with flavors but completely bland it’s like if they have forgotten how to use salt!!, I need el portal to get back on track; I love the ambient and the people there and being the fact I am Colombian its the one place I can enjoy food from my roots. other than that the place is incredible the feel is quite homey and to top it off besides being a restaurant it’s also a bakery with traditional baked goods from Colombia which not to mention are baked fresh at times to order but are nostalgic to a Colombian.Place is well kept nice and clean, Plates have quite the presentations and also clean, Bathrooms on the other hand can probably use an upgradeif you have never tried Colombian food this is the place to go to I recommended 90% of the time but as I have mentioned they need to step up on the salt game, thats what we are known for flavor and well-salted platters!!!!Bon Apptit!!Exploit Your Palate
After lunch at Menas we strolled down to the Colombian bakery El Portal, which was only 50 feet away in the same strip mall. Neither of us had been there before.Om: Very mixed feelings about this place! It was clean, the guy that helped us was nice, and the food looked great. We tried a variety of baked goods, no full meals since we just ate. One of the items, a small powdered caramel cookie, was OUTSTANDING. I could eat 30 of these, no kidding. Some of the pastries were ok the one with caramel filling was tasty, the one with caramel and guava was still alright. I guess I dont care for guava all that much. On the opposite end of the spectrum, we tried two different kinds of rolls baked with cheese. I didnt care for either, just wasnt for me. I think it was made with some kind of cheese that I just dont care for. So, they had one item that I loved, one that I liked, one that was just ok, and two that I disliked. All that said, you can tell the quality was there in all the items. I would like to go back and try their entres to get a better feel on their food. If you like Colombian food I really think that you would LOVE this place its authentic and of high quality. So far its just not for me.Nom: Talk about something out of the ordinary! It was a stretch for me just because the place has tinted windows so you cant see in. So if youve never tried Columbian food its a total and literal blind buy. Its a very small store front but clean and it had a few people having lunch. It smelled great but since he had just had lunch we sampled from their bakery. They had these tiny sugar cooked with caramel in the middle that were out of this world! We also tried a puff pastry filled with caramel that was very good. The pastry with guava and cheesewell I can appreciate it but its not something I would purchase to have on hand to eat. I thought I would love the bread but they use some sort of cheese that I just cant get past the smell. So those will be a pass for me in the future. If you want to try Columbian food or you enjoy Columbian food you will love this place. Im glad we tried it and Ill stop by and get my handsome love some more cookies but otherwise its really not my thing
Authentic – Do Give It A Try. This place came highly recommended from friends that are Colombian. I joined them for lunch today. Spanish speaking patrons and employees abound. Even the menu is in Spanish. That speaks volumes to me on the authenticity of the food being offered. My friends absolutely rave over the plantain soup and various types of breads. I did really enjoy the soup. However, the flavor and style of the rest of the food is not a preference of mine. There was nothing bad here, it just did not click with me. I think most everyone will really enjoy this place. The feeling is authentic.
GREAT BAKERY!!! The almojabanas are GREAT BAKERY!!! The almojabanas are absolutely the best when served warm with a delicious cup of Colombian coffee! I’ve been here plenty of times and the food never disappoints… The service can be a bit slow, but if you go on a Sunday morning you should be fine. It gives you the feeling of being in your grandma’s kitchen! Good times!! :). Getting 3 stars due to the fact that you have to get in like every time you want to order something not the food!
AWESOME FOOD!!!!. I LOVE this place. I literally crave their food. It is fresh, healthy and very flavorful. I especially like their brunelos, which is a bakery item. The have a special kids menu if you ask, my 10 yr old loves their food as well, BIG FANS!!!
Will go again!. My husband and I tried El Portal today, and plan on coming back again soon – especially since the menu changes daily. While we were paying, we thanked the employee for his dessert recommendation and mentioned how it is our first time there and how much we enjoyed the food and he gave us free dessert to take home! I love local places that add special touches like that!
NO BUENO. NOT GOOD!. Slow serviceRude peoplePoor food tasteFrozen foodNothing special about the foodToo expensiveEmpanadas = not goodI’ve had the best empanadas at a Peruvian Restaurant in the area, what are the odds, huh?? Peruvians making better Colombian empanadas than Colombians.
