Never disappointed at Vernon’s… Catfish, hushpuppies and pickled green tomatoes . . . a winning combo.

Wonderful. Few do catfish right this place is a delightful exception. The breading is not overbearing, it allows the fish to shine as the bright star. Althought fried it wasn’t greasy. Sides were pintos and a healthy portion of slaw. And, the hush puppies were perfect. This is a close to catfish heaven as you’re going to get on this earth.

Didn’t care for the atmosphere at all. Felt like I was eating is a messhall of some sort. Homestyle, I suppose, but not my kind of food or atmosphere….won’t be going back.

Bland bland bland. Up for the the Christmas holiday week,, we were out and about and decided to try a local establishment. When we drove by we saw Vernon’s Kuntry Catfish and thought, mmm looks busy… must be good, let’s give that place a try. The short version is, if you were really young or really old, you’ll probably like it. (As in you haven’t developed or lost taste) The long versoin is, if you like your greenbeans straight out of the can, your mash potatoes out of the package and soupy, your oakra straight out of the freezer, and your country fried chicken sliced thin and fried, you’ll love this place. I mean, there was absolutly no seasoning what so ever. The green beans had not a lick of a thing called flavor. They were so mushy I had to eat them with a spoon. When I was in the industry, yes… we used canned green beans, but we added sauted onion, garlic, and ham or bacon. These did not even have salt and pepper. The mashed potatos were straight from box to stove top with water. The chicken fried chicken was half of a breast sliced thin. (did they actually do this, or was it prepackaged this way?) And the catfish was no better than anyone elses that takes it straight from the freezer bag. This was not the down home cooking I’d expect from a rural country place. If I wanted institutional food, I would have gone to Luby’s by the freeway. The service stalf were was nice, but all in all, if you don’t have blue hair, or are a bland seeking child, look elsewhere for your down home meal.

Awesome place! The catfish was wonderful, the crawfish touffe was great and the key lime pie and peach cobbler are to die for. The pickled green tomato relish had a great flavor and nice kick to it! I would definitely come back next time I am down in this area.
