It ain’t Cajun!. Somebody’s idea of what Cajun might possibly be. Along with the theory, if you make everything super-salty and hot, some people will believe it’s authentic.I’m from Louisiana, I know what authentic is. It doesn’t hurt that I grew up across the woods from Justin Wilson in Tangipahoa Parish.Muffalatta was so packed with salt, I couldn’t finish it.Baked beans, pretending to be red beans? Don’t they know the difference? Tasted like chili powder in the rb&r.Interesting, if you’re adventurous. Brisket with gravy on rice? Mama never cooked it. Neither did Uncle Justin!

STRADDLING THE FENCE. I’ve been here an hour and no one has offered me a glass of water. Hopefully the food is good. I’m from New Orleans so I consider myself a damn good judge of Cajun Delicacies. The entertainment was good (students from a nearby high school), but the service is HORRIBLE! No management to complain to or rectify this mess. But since I paid $10 to park, I’ll have to wait until someone acknowledges me.

I love this place! I’ve been craving some serious Cajun food and they nailed it!! I recently went to the Alligator Cafe and was beyond disappointed by their attempt at Cajun food. But The Free Man delivers every time! Their touffe is as good as anything I cook myself (that’s saying a lot) and as good as anything you get in NOLA or Baton Rouge. The sweet potato fries are the best I’ve ever had! I need to try them again so that I can nail down the recipe at home considering that theirs are better than the ones I make. The atmosphere makes you think you’re in authentic Louisiana. The live music was too loud though. You couldn’t even have a conversation inside. We had to wait for a table to free up outside. Highly recommend this place. I will be going again and I will be taking guests from out of town here when they visit. Keep up the good work!

I love it!. Such a great place to meet up & coming musicians! I love the music, the people, and the vibe in that place. one of the bars that act more like a lounge and no sleazy people just trying to hit on you all the time.with great music. slightly louder than i’d liked but you can always go outside and have a nice conversation with people you’ve just met. I met two musicians there so my experiences was very good. I like the fact it’s really is a more upscale cultured bar/lounge with food(although i havent tried the food yet) and there is live music so i think it’s a place you meet small musicians.on the picture ive provided is the band that is playing that night. they are a blue & jazz band and it was pretty awesome.

Great music and fun food.. This is my favorite place to meet in Deep Ellum. You get jazz early and pop later on in the night. I had lots of oysters and they were great. My date loved her food too.

Great Food, Great Music, Great Neighborhood. Since leaving south Louisiana, there’s been a Boudin shaped hole in my heart that only the Free Man can fill. As my fianc so eloquently put it, I wish these devilishly good fried temptations weren’t so close to my house. Is gumbo a healthier alternative? I hope so because theirs is delicious. The touffe is made differently depending on that night’s chef, one version being lighter than the other- still good, but dare I say less authentic? Either way, the savory sweet cornbread along side is enough to make me go back. These Creole favorites are served every night (Even Sundays) until midnight. Sitting outside on an unseasonably warm night, the music of the brass band drifting out onto the street, staring off at the rows of abandoned historic buildings, I can almost forget where I am… New Orleans? No not quite, but still, the Deep Ellum vibe is the closest thing to it. If you’re looking for the real thing, go between 7-10pm, when there’s a guaranteed Jazz ensemble, or after 10 for a more rock or hip-hop scene. What would I change if it were my bar? Three beers on tap isn’t enough to compete with the dozens of other bars in this area. And even a dive bar should have cleaner tables. And at the risk of sounding really lame, the noise level was unnecessary. I want to be able to hear the music again next week too!

This is one of the best Cajun restaurants my girl friend I have been able to find in dallas. The live music was on point, the service and Managment was also A1. The manager even stood out side handing out free samples and brought some inside to us as well. If you ever want a great spot to relax and have great food and drinks Free mans is the spot.
