Disaster at Lolita’s, the travesty that calls itself a restaurant. I dined with my family at Lolita’s today, not my first time. It’s normally not bad and I’ve had some alright dishes, but today was horrendous. My mother and I both ordered the coconut curry mussels. The mussel dish arrived at the table and actually looked quite appetizing aside from the cream sauce looking excessively thick and rich. The trouble started when I started trying to pull the mussels out of there shells. The problem was that there wasn’t a single mussel to be found. I kept going from shell to shell only to find some rancid, stringy mucus looking thing that I can only imagine was supposed to be the mussels. My mother offered her dish to me because she didn’t even want to waste her time like I was. I encountered the same thing, I can only imagine that the pathetic excuse they have for cooks are underpaid and had to eat the mussels out of the shells in the kitchen for survival. Instead of eating the mussels one at a time, I piled everything I was able to pull out of the shells together to show it to our server. The stringy mucus amounted to what would be the meat of one mussel, maybe two if I want to be generous. This is what came out of at least 30 shells. Our server apologized and said that he had received numerous complaints about the mussels. I asked him why they were still serving them and why they hadn’t attempted to change the supplier. He attempted to talk to his general manager and he came back and handed us our bill. Both mussel plates were still on the bill, there was no discount and not even an offer of a free desert or coffee. My ruined day only got worse when both my mother and I started to feel ill about 45 minutes later. Seeing as how the other people that ate at the restaurant were fine I could only attribute it to Lolita’s cheap excuse for mussels they probably found in the sewer behind the restaurant. I called and asked for the general manager, of course nobody spoke english but I was able to get the general manager on the phone. He defended the pathetic dish and the supplier of the mussels and also acknowledged that many people had complained about them. It wasn’t until I started yelling at the little man that he started to apologize for my experience. He pulled every excuse possible and even admitted that the plates are not checked for quality before they are sent to table. He asked what he could do to make it right and seeing as how I am never going back to that turdhole again, I begged him not to serve those sea turds pretending to be mussels to any other customers. He couldn’t even promise me that. I imagine as I am writing this there are other people dining on that putrid dish preparing for the worst later tonight in front of a trash can. The one good thing I can say about my experience at Cholita’s was that the beer was cold. How sad for a city that is lacking in quality restaurants.

Amazing Food. Hands down one of the best restaurants Laredo has ever seen. The place has a great ambiance perfect to go have a glass of wine, a beer or a cappuccino. The service is incredible, very attentive and friendly staff. It would be a crime to go and not have their Lobster Tacos; you cant go wrong with those, the flavors blend perfectly well and will surely make you pay them another visit. I have tried several other dishes off their simple but varied menu. The salpicon tostadas are a personal favorite as well as their raviolis! If you are a healthy eater during week days Lolitas is the perfect place to indulge on healthy food, they are vegan and vegetarian friendly, offering a couple of vegan selections, make sure and try the vegetarian lasagna. Also dont forget to try the chocolate abuelita cake, I promise it wont disappoint. This restaurant is definitely something different from what Laredo offers.

I’m Obsessed!. When I first discovered Lolita’s Bistro I was skeptical. As soon as I walked into the restaurant I was amazed. The decor and ambiance is sublime! You feel at home! It’s such a cool and relaxed restaurant, and the staff is very friendly! The food is out of this world good! My favorite dish has to be the Ahi Tuna Caesar Salad. It sounds simple but the flavors are perfectly combined and that creates an amazing light salad. Since the addition of new items to the menu I have to say that my new favorite dish is the Grilled Salmon with Pasta and Pesto! It is so good, I am craving it right now! I’ve also had the Caprese Panini and it is delicious. I highly recommend the Chocolate Abuelita Cake! I have never tasted anything so decadent and delicious in my life! Overall I would highly recommend this restaurant! It is truly something different and special!

Decent Food & Prices. I headed out today during the lunch hour on the recommendation of a few locals. Seeing as how I’ve been away from Laredo for a few months, I decided to try a new restaurant. The interior is decorated nicely; it’s something that moves away from the typical eatery in town. The menu is simple but varied. I started off with a Baja Style Lobster Taco as the appetizer; it was okay. I would have thought an ingredient such as lobster would have been put on something a little more upscale than a flour tortilla. It had the lobster (which was scarce), saffron rice, black beans, chipotle sauce and avocado. All the flavors were muted and taste of a flour tortilla didn’t help the palate find the distinct lobster taste. One taco for almost $6 – steep. I’m not a big fan of chicken but I wanted to give it a try. The presentation was simple but elegant. The garlic mashed potatoes had a great homemade taste and not overpowered by the garlic. It was topped by julienned vegetables. I wasn’t too impressed with the chicken or the claim of having lemon. Though there was a slice of lemon placed over the breast. The chicken was a bit dry and didn’t have any pronounced flavor. It wasn’t something that backed up the recommendations given by a few people I know. Overall, I’d go again to try out their other menu items. It’s good that the town is bringing in something other than the dominent fare.
