2016 – we just had the Christmas Buffet – so highly toted at the restaurant. It was disgusting. The food was old and cold. Turkeys and hams cooked at least two days before. When making reservations was told there would be prime rib. It was cold tough roast beef. Husband couldn’t even chew it and had to spit it out. Does the manager know what prime rib is? Had horseradish out but in all my years have never seen it put on anything by prime rib. Chocolate cake (which was the only dessert I saw) was days old. Dressing was soggy, and tasteless. So far we ended up eating corn. green beans and rolls. All for a total of $43. dollars for 2. Would have had a much better meal at Luby’s or Golden Corral for less the price. At least at those places a person has a wide variety to choose from. Not so at the Echo’s Christmas Buffet. This place needs a major overall. Inside and outside the kitchen. Steer clear people. Guess they feel they can take the Winter Texans out of a little money.
A true Texas treasure uknown to most outsiders. The Echo Hotel and its Grandview restaurant is a true South Texas treasure that is as beloved today as it was when new in 1959. The entire place was built by the citizens of Edinburg with over 1000 of them buying stock so they could have a nice hotel and conference center.Nostalgia will overwhelm you when you dine, or stay, at the Echo Hotel as you step back in time to what is almost a living museum of a bygone time. Much of the staff has been pleasing extremely loyal customers for thee and four decades. My wife and I were so lucky to discover this incredible (truly) value and have now returned for a week’s stay two years in a row. Several we’ve met have been coming to the Echo since the 1970’s.If you are in the upper Rio Grande Valley, pretend you are an old Hildalgo County-hand and have lunch at the huge, and fantastic (and under $10!!!) lunch buffet. You’ll be joining almost every civic club and organization in town as well as about a hundred others each day.Breakfast, lunch and dinner is all fabulous and a value you will likely not believe at first. Honest cooking with service from a staff for whom the Echo is a life-long career will amaze you. Lunch and dinner is on white linen table cloths and you’ll never be stuck with a paper napkin at the Grandview. The Tropicana Lounge bar in the hotel is an honest old fashioned bar and you’ll love it too.I’ve been to almost every corner and pocket in Texas and this place is one I’d miss the most if it was to go away.
