Caracas Cowboy. My family and I made reservations for Thanksgiving dinner based on our previous experience with the Hilltop Cafe. Unfortunately, the ham and lamb were inedible and were, subsequently, removed from the menu. The turkey was good as were the other sides. Service was OK, but slow. Very disappointed. Hope this was an anomaly.

Poor service. My wife and another couple make a trip every year because our anniversaries are around the same time of year. This year we went to Fredericksburg. We had heard about the Hilltop Caf and decided we wanted to try it. On Friday we called and made reservations like was suggested we do, which was for 6:30 on Saturday evening. We arrived about 6:05, which was early but we did not want to be late, knowing the drive out of town would take awhile. We was told our table had someone at it and we would have to wait. So we waited at the bar and had a drink while we waited. Other people with reservations at 6:30 and were seated immediately while we waited. At 7:00 we told them we were leaving. They did not charge us for the drinks which was the only bright side of the experience. We went back to town, ate Mexican food, small wait, good prices and good food. My advice stay away from Hilltop, overpriced and bad service!!!!

Poor service. Stopped for brunch on our way from San Antonio to Midland. Took ten to fifteen minutes to turn in a drink order. Watched one couple get up and leave in disgust after waiting to be served. Food was mediocre. Service was slow, unfriendly and the server didn’t offer any information regarding the menu including the fact that no sides are served with brunch entrees or bother to refill our drinks. Highly disappointed as I had anticipated a great experience. Perhaps it was an off day…doubt we will ever go back. There are too many other gems in the hill country.

NOT RECOMMENDED. Worst service I have ever experienced. We were the second table to sit down and it was 10 minutes before we were even greeted, with only one other table in the restaurant. Servers had bad attitudes and people were walking out because they never got waited on. I waited for 15 minutes with an empty glass and finally had to wave someone over to get a refill. I was incredibly disappointed with entire experience and I will never go back.

No longer a destination for us. Food mediocre, service less so.

Not sure it was worth the hype, but good. They have a lot of options, good food, and friendly service. It’s not super high quality food, but it is tasty and it’s kind of a treat for Fredericksburg overall.

I’m a Local and Love It!. Let me first say, in defense of Hill Top Cafe, that it is family own and run. It is not part of some corporate chain, therefore the prices are a bit more than what you might expect to pay at a chain affiliated dining establishment. The service may also be slower as well. This is the kind of place you need to allow time for and to allow yourself to slow down and be in the moment. When I visit Hill Top Cafe, I always start with a Greek salad, as it’s great. It’s a large salad, so you can share it. If you prefer not to share, you can order it as a meal and add shrimp or oysters to it for an extra fee. The chips and salsa are also very good. Having family in Louisiana, and knowing what Gumbo should taste like, I have to say the Gumbo is the only thing I’ve tried at the cafe that’s not up to par. It’s very bland.I will say that my personal favorites from the lunch menu are the shrimp po-boy, the oyster po-boy or the Shrimp Mytelinni. The seafood is lightly breaded for the sandwiches and the roumalaude sauce is great, and served on the side, so you decide how much goes on your sandwich. Be advised, a po-boy is just that, no sides or extras, and I think it runs about $12. The second dish mentioned, is very nice as the shrimp are pan seared, served over rice, with a side of stewed okra and black beans.I like that there is Splenda to sweeten the tea with~Their desserts are great. I usually indulge in the pecan pie with ice cream on the side.Lunch for two generally runs about $50 plus a tip when I go.I will say, that one thing I really appreciate is the bathroom is always immaculately clean EVERY time I’ve been. I appreciate that! It says a lot about how the rest of the place must look, particularly the kitchen.Love Hill Top Cafe. It’ smy favorite place to eat locally. It’s off the Main Stree nightmare/tourist trap/beaten path!
