Great place, great food, and even frozen offerings to cook at home. The placed is named for their great tamales, but their smothered burritos are just as great.
A friend of mine wanted to go to Tommy Tamale in Grapevine. Neither of us had been there and we wanted to try something new. They have moved into the end of a strip mall just west of downtown Grapevine with a lot of parking. I remember this spot being a not-very-good Mexican restaurant back in the eighties that I had never returned to. With Tommy’s now located there, the interior is bright, with a walk up counter for ordering tamales to eat in, a window for tamales-to-go, and about eight or nine tables at which to sit. Since this was fast casual we both ordered off of the limited menu; me a tamale plate consisting of (my choice) two chicken tamales and two habanero pork tamales, rice and beans, while my friend had the tamale pie. We took a seat while waiting for the preparation. After about five minutes we were rewarded with some freshly made tamales. My friend’s tamale pie consisted of fritos, queso and beans mixed together on a bottom layer with two tamales layered above. I offered him some of my salsa to complete his meal. He said it was enjoyable. My tamale plate was equally as good. The medium-sized chicken and habanero tamales (not terribly spicy) were tender , crumbly delicious. The refried beans were whipped smooth, and not greasy or fatty. Seasoned perfectly on all accounts. The rice was good too. It made for a fine dinner. Since this was fast casual, it was mostly serve yourself for the drinks, although Chef Bradley Borchardt, came out and greeted us with firm handshakes. We were checked on at regular intervals asking if we lacked anything. Everything was fine.We missed The Daytripper, Chet Garner, who along with his family, had eaten here earlier in the day. He seems to know the good places to hit in town, and my friend and I agreed that this is a nice little niche restaurant in Grapevine.
Instant Favorite & Earns a Spot in My Hole in the Wall List. I love this tiny hole in the wall. It’s just a box by the side of the road. The car repair garage is more noticeable than the tiny white box. It feels like you are walking into a construction trailer when you enter the front door. There is a small counter with a chalkboard menu that lists all the types of tamales. They sell them in packs of 6. One pack is $7. Two packs is $12. You can pick up a frozen order for home warming, or they will heat them up for you. If they heat the tamales, they will wrap them in tinfoil to keep them warm. The guy serving me (wonder if that was Tommy?) said the pork tamale was their #1 seller. I can’t argue with that, so I got the Habanero Pork Tamale. Wow it was soooo good. I ate three of the six and shared the rest with my family at home. They loved it. I will be back. So awesome.
