If you feel like having mexican food, do not go there. It can trick you with a good decor and ambience but the food was not good. We ordered the shrimp and lobster soup which came in a cup plate smaller than the salsa bowl and taste wise wasn’t good. The worst part was when we asked the waitress for their bas tacos and she said it was fish. Well that fish tacos got us feeling sick, it also had a weird after taste which we recognized as catfish. When we asked the waitress she said it is Tilapia. Either case we felt sick when we went home. IF you want Mexican, Taco Bell is a better choice than this..
Went here for lunch for a friend’s birthday… Service was fantastic. Food was fresh and delicious. Everything is a bit heavy on the heat so if you don’t like that, make sure to request your entree on the mild side. I want to say the menu is on the expensive side but we paid around $70 for lunch for 3 so it is manageable for the obvious quality… Don’t miss the table side guac, it’s fantastic!
The table side quac is great! We both went with the cheese and onion enchiladas. The side of rice was pretty standard, the frijoles a la charra were very good, little pieces of meat in there for flavor. I loved the chips, thin, crisp, and the salsa is really good and fresh. Our waiter Jorge was very friendly and Johnny on the Spot with the refills. We are here during lunch on a Sunday. Mostly empty at 11:45, packed at 12:30.
Excellent, fresh, mesquite chicken and steak smokey grilled fajitas. Complimentary chips are light, thin and crispy. Request the spicy hot salsa, excellent and full of flavor. It will open up your sinuses
We revisited within a week’s time and can say the service was much better. Our server, Drayton, was really getting after it. He was a huge improvement from who we had on our initial visit. The food is good, the flavor is there. The fajitas were actually sizzling hot this time. The other entrees were hot as well. Our issue here is serving size. The portions tend to be on the small side. This place is not cheap either. We came in just under $100 for a party of three with one margarita and no dessert. We may return but won’t be rushing to do so.–The jury is still out on this one. This eatery is nicely appointed but the food and service lacked for us. Our server was unbelievably slow. He was nice but rather inept. This restaurant was three quarters empty when we visited late in the afternoon. The chips and salsa were simple yet outstanding. The food that was served was not hot or even warm but more like room temperature. This was consistent for all of the entrees that our party of four ordered. All in our party agreed that the potential is there for something great to be happening here but it was not happening with us. One entree ordered were the chicken and steak fajitas. There were served not sizzling and again not really hot. Others around us who ordered the same thing had theirs sizzling hot. The chocolate piata seemed to go over best. This is creative and tasty and it better be for $20. In the end, a revisit is in order and we hope the service and food will be much improved when we try again.
Everywhere you turn in the Houston area, there seems to be another Mexican restaurant. Its a popular food due to many factors and one of the newer ones to open near my home is Uncle Julios, a restaurant chain famous for its made from scratch process.Because Uncle Julios is still relatively new, the interest in this restaurant is high and it can take time to get seated. I took my family here for the first time around 4pm, allowing us to beat the dinner rush and get seated faster than expected. The interior is large and there is an outdoor patio, so it helps things move along at a reasonable pace. With so many people dining, there are also a good number finishing and exiting at any given time, so it helps keep things moving. Now, lets talk about the food and drink. Uncle Julios strives to use fresh, locally produced ingredients and the restaurant does serve up some tasty food. I ordered Juanitas Platter when I visited- an entre with one chicken and one beef enchilada, a beef taco, pork tamale, rice, and beans. Its a nice assortment of meats- not to mention quite filling- and I found each item pretty good tasting overall and seasoned just right. The rice seemed a little on the dry side, like it had been sitting a little too long after cooking, but the rest of the food was just fine. My wife liked her fajitas and the kids were happy with their kids meals, so everything seemed good from the food side of things. For drinks, I was a little disappointed at the poor selection of beer. Its the usual beers you find in a Mexican restaurant and includes choices like Corona, Tecate, Modelo, Budweiser, etc. With such a poor selection of beer, I stuck with iced tea but the wife did order a pineapple margarita, which she did like, although she wishes the serving had been a little larger. Overall, I have to say that Uncle Julios is a good restaurant and better than most other Mexican chains. It would be nice if they would expand the beer selection and offer at least a few local beer options but I do like the food and I look forward to future visits to this Mexican/TexMex establishment. greatbeernow.com
