Still Our Favorite TexMex. Over the years, Donna and her crew have provided the most consistently good TexMex food in Killeen. The servers at this location are way above par for this area and the food is always excellent. This place features a killer shrimp cocktail and the best crispy tacos in town. We often get extra salsa to take home as theirs is just about the best there around.UPDATE as of 02/13/2016 -This was our first visit to this restaurant in quite a while. We had not been too impressed on two earlier visits that occurred after a change in management. Prior to this change, we were weekly or twice-weekly visitors to this El Chico restaurant. We decided to give it another try. Result?: We will not be going back any time soon.We were seated promptly by one of the servers. (They once had a host or hostess greet and seat guests.) Our order was taken quickly and the wait then began. There were 3 or 4 other parties in the restaurant, two servers, and what appeared to be the manager. The servers were having to wait on tables and cover the hostess duties; the manager was working the bar where there were three guests. At one point, the restaurant had a couple of parties waiting to be seated and no one to take care of them since the 2 servers were busy with their tables and the manager was behind the bar. After a good 5-minute wait, one of those parties seemed frustrated and appeared to be going back out the front door when one of the servers managed to get to the entrance and did seat them. Now the food: The chips served were cold and greasy; the salsa was as good as it had ever been (and that its very good). For our entres, I had the (2)Chorizo and egg taco plate. The flour tortillas were a little dry and appeared to be store-bought as opposed to freshly-made. The egg/potato/chorizo mixture was fairly mild and was tasty but also a little dry. The tacos were served with Mexican rice and refried beans. The beans were a more watery than I remembered from the past, but the rice was as good as it had been previously. According to the menu, the tacos were also to be served with pico de gallo, but this was never brought to the table. My wife had the Uno lunch plate which consisted of one beef taco and a cheese enchilada also with beans and rice. My wife really liked the beef taco, but could only eat half of the cheese enchilada. I took a taste of her enchilada and felt that it had way too much of a chili powder taste. The only time our server came to check on us was right after we got our drinks, never after we had gotten our food. Our drinks were not refilled, and our chips were never replenished, nor was our salsa. This location was once a great link in the El Chico chain of restaurants and it is sad to see that, in our opinion, it has fallen off so far since their previous manager retired.
Horrible Horrible Horrible. The service was absolutely pathetic. The chicken dish I ordered was way undercooked. I will NEVER go back to this location. It was dirty. The bathrooms were not cleaned or stocked. It was just awful
Ordered chicken and mushroom enchiladas, and the mushrooms were so salty I could not eat it. This was the first time iv ever sent something back. Then I order avocado enchiladas, and instead of making the mushrooms in it less salty, they just didn’t put them in there at all, and there was nothing left in the thing after that! Even though the mushrooms were taken out, it was still very salty, and I kinda like salty stuff. But da*m!! SALTY!!
Great staff, poor food. The wait staff was wonderful, unfortunately the food was not. The rice had a strange taste to it and definitely missed the mark. The Chicken Chimichanga had so much cheese in it I was scraping it off so i could taste the other ingredients, I love cheese but this was too much. Although the salsa and chips were excellent it doesn’t make up for a bad entree.
Anyone who puts a good review about El Chico on the Cen-Tex expressway must be an employee wanting a promotion or a raise ’cause they suck. Bad food bad service!
Great drinks and the best guacamole ever! Service was awesome and helpful too! Can’t wait to go back
What a GREAT experience @ El Chico Killeen!. My wife, Alison, me, and her family and I ate at El Chico killeen a few hours ago. The host, Ty, warmly greeted us and made special accomadations for our party. Since my sister in law was handicapped he made sure to put us out of the way in the corner of the restaurant. Not only did Ty make us feel welcomed, he made us feel like family. Ty had a conversation about the Pittsburgh Steelers with me, and also told me about his family from Pittsburgh. He told me he was going to UT in Austin soon, so I hope he enjoys it and gets everything out of it! Jilleen was our server, and she was absolutely phenomonal! Jilleen was able to answer all of my family’s questions, showing that she knew the menu well. Jilleen also made reccomendations on what dish I should get. I got the Taco Salad and it came in a giant taco! It was soooo cool and delicious! Oh and btw, Rhoda made some kick-asssssssss margaritas. I still feel a little tipsy after only 2, so I know there was alcohol in there! I <3 El Chico Killeen. Not only did the people my family interact with treat us well, but so did the rest of the restaurant. I believe it was Haley and Justin who had also come by our table to give us a drink refill or two. El Chico Killeen is a MUST GO place if you live or are visiting in the area. My wife loved the combo fajita special she got since it was Tuesday. I looooooooooooooooooooooooooved it!
