I have been going here since the mid 80’s when dad ran the joint and they were in an old Dairy Queen building. This place has great food. I get the same thing everytime: chicken fried chicken, mashed potatoes, black eyed peas and collard greens. So Good Makes you wanna slap yo mama…
I’ve been here a few times. Service is always outstanding. Food is good for the most part. I had the chicken fried chicken. It comes with the cream gravy already on it and that was fine with me. It was a little over half covered. The chicken was very tender, cooked thoroughly and adequately seasoned. The yams were whipped smoothly and were slightly sweet. The fried okra was not greasy and was about as good as I have had anywhere. The buttered carrots were definitely homemade. They were very tender, but thankfully not mushy. It’s nice that they give you a choice of three side dishes here and they have a good variety. The only blatant negative that I can give Po’ Melvin’s was with their dinner rolls. I did not like them at all. They must have been frozen. One was hard as a rock and was inedible. The other one was not fluffy at all. I did not even bother with butter and just ate it as an afterthought. They have a nice setup with both booths and tables. The chairs are heavy wood and are comfortable as are the booths which are upholstered. They had piped in 50’s music which was loud enough to hear without it being ear-shattering. Service, as mentioned was really good. I did not need a refill for the drink as it was about 24 ounces! My server still stopped by a few times to check up on me, as did the owner. That was cool!If you come for lunch, try to get here early, because the room fills up fast! This is the only countryfied restaurant like this around here and you’ll find it is better than Cracker Barrel, even though they are similar in type.
Never ever will I eat here again. The last time I ate there was on my daughter’s birthday (15 yr old) only because she likes their chicken fried steak. On that night a gentleman sitting at the bar overheard our conversation & decided to pay for our meals. I was flattered & besides that he was attracted. So he called Melvins over & PAID for our meals. I was so excited about it & posted it on FB & yelp. Now months later, yesterday, I decided not to cook & ask my daughter what she wanted. Po Melvins is close to where I live. So I go there to pick up dinner only to be told when I got there that the last time I was there I stole my dinner. I spoke with the owner trying to clarify when he thought I skipped out on a meal. He (Melvin) stated that that my daughter & I ate a meal at the bar, which I never do, & then took two meals to go out the door. I have never dined in at this restaurant the two other times I visited it. So I asked what he thought I owed him if there was any confusion from someone else paying. He then said nothing because we’re all the same. At this point I was done. We’re all the same? I politely walked my ass out of there before it got ugly. Never in my life will I eat there again. By the way the chicken fried steak had too much breading & the sides were not fresh & tasted bland.
This is one of my favorite places to eat with my family! Every time I go, I order the fried pork chops and they are always delicious! The food is always fresh and the waiters and waitresses are always quick no matter how busy. This place is the exact definition of southern hospitality!
Roast Beef Po’ Boy. This dish is to die for. I had to eat it with a fork.
Great Service and Fantastic Food. Started with a salad and cup of shrimp gumbo that was fabulously flavorful, would come back just for the gumbo. Dinner was one of the best chicken fried steaks, tender and tasty. The waitress, Josey was friendly and timely with refills of my tea glass. Will definitely be bringing client’s here for lunch.
Disapointment. 1st plate was the roastbeef w/rice. The roastbeef was straight out of the CAN. There is nothing homestyle or homemade about this place. The yams an corn. Out of a can. Plate 2, the blackened chicken. To much seasoned rub an not enough grillen. All around word, Disappointment. Even had a frozen hurricain drink. Bad! Would not return. Shame on Melvin for calling this homecooking.
