Awesome and if you love this one and pass through kingwood area their sister restaurant el ranchero on northpark is just as awesome and the margaritas will kick you back in fact the manager always makes his rounds to make sure everything was to your satisfaction
Extensive, ambitious menu IS the way to go, after all. My first visit in June I ordered a large Tex Mex combination dinner. Some items were ok to good, others were not. But I was impressed with the large menu featuring many dishes not found at most Mexican restaurants in this area. So I decided to go back 3 months later to explore this large menu. Besides, I had read reviews on other sites that were complimentary of dishes such as Shrimp Diablo, Shrimp Ranchero, Pollo Jardin, Poblano Fajitas, etc.Bolstered by good reviews and hungry for fajitas, I returned and ordered Mixed Fajitas w/ shrimp, beef & chicken. Beef was tender and chicken & shrimp weren’t over-cooked, as is too often the case.Red salsa was better–they added more peppers and it was less watery–pretty good, actually. Chips still taste like they come from a supplier, and refried beans are still awful. But I was much more impressed with the fajitas this time that i was with the combo plate.El Tucan reminds me of another Mexican restaurant here in League City, El Centinella, in that both have very large menus and neither do combo plates all that well. There are many very good Mexican places in this area that do a better job with Tex Mex combination plates, but their menus are not as ambitious as El Tucan (and El Centinella).I wish this place were more festive–kinda drab. And I wish El Tucan SMELLED more like a Mexican restaurant with all those great aromas…but it’s a good place to get something off the beaten Tex Mex path. I appreciate El Tucan for that reason and will return to explore the menu!27 Jun, 2013Explore the Extensive Menu More??. When I visit a Mexican restaurant for the first time, I usually order the largest combo platter available so I can sample a variety of Tex Mex favorites. The El Tucan Combo seemed the perfect choice because it featured a chili relleno which was actually pretty good. On the plus side, their garlicly rice with bits of corn was exceptional. But there were just too many negatives. Chips are course & grainy suggesting they are supplied by a vendor–to not be able to enjoy thin, light corn tortilla chips made fresh at the restaurant is a cardinal sin in my book. Hot sauce was watery and not hot enough to be interesting. Another turn-off was refried beans which are devoid of flavor and strangely orange-brown in color. Not sure what they put in the beans to cause the weird color, but whatever it is, it didn’t do anything to add some taste. Queso was pale, runny and had very little flavor. Then there was a communication issue that resulted in some of my order being wrong. And this place is drab, not at all festive–so that’s a turn-off.Admittedly, their menu is ambitious and maybe the way to go here is to get off the beaten Tex Mex path. But you still have to get past an uninteresting dining room, watery hot sauce & queso, weird beans, bad chips and a waiter that needs to be more proficient in English. And those are too many hurdles for me to want to return and try some different menu items.
Great Food and Service. My family and I go here a couple of times per month. It’s my favorite Mexican food in the area. The Carnitas are the best I’ve had and the service is always good. Not much of an atmosphere, just great food.
