People in Lubbock raved about Giorgio’s during a recent trip I took to their city. I decided to see for myself. I ordered a Giorgio’s pie; the crust was decent, yet I felt the pizza was a little too chewy for my tastes. Also, there was too much oil on my pie. Overall verdict: so-so. Giorgio’s is a local institution and family owned. I’m glad they do well as I always appreciate local restaurants and support their efforts whenever possible.

There was a Groupon recently for Giorgio’s downtown. I used to work downtown and whenever someone had a birthday, the workers would go pick up Giorgio’s pizza or calzones. It was always pretty good. I am no where near downtown anymore, and I figured what the heck, the groupon will help pay for the gas in my old piece of crap 1999 Truck which I think gets about 5 miles to a gallon. I never check my mpg. Only poors like my buddy Steve do this. I talked one of my sons into going with me because so far I have not mastered the ability to go to a restaurant and eat by myself like Skuzzy does. I have not been to a movie alone either. I wish I could do this, but I just feel like people would look at me and laugh or pity me which is even worse. Hey Marge, look at that old guy sitting alone…. I bet his wife left him…or I bet he has no real friends…which both happens to be true. It was Friday and we were in no hurry to go and my son looks up the address and says whoa this place closes at 6pm. So we rushed downtown driving in rush hour traffic which by the way has anyone noticed there is more damn traffic in dirt city than there used to be and everyone drives like a bat out of hell? As you go down the street to get there, you pass some place that must deal with the homeless because there were bums all over the place. I have nothing against bums, and I use the term in a loving way. Hell, I might be a bum soon the way things are going. So the thought occurs to me that maybe that is why Georgio closes at 6pm. It is out of bum fear. We go inside and the first thing I notice is the place seems bigger inside than it looks. There are two seating areas. One area was full of some sports team and they had ordered the giant pizzas which are huge. The girl who took our order was not overly friendly. That is fine, not everyone has a great day every day. We ordered a large pepperoni, son got a coke, and I got water. I forget what I paid but it seemed about right. Not cheap but not overly expensive either. We sat down and the side where we were was just us and another table of 3. We noticed a sign saying it was First Friday Art Trail day so they were staying open til 9 or 10 and you can byob if you want. We shoulda brought beers. There was also a young guy setting up in front to play music. I noticed they have a lot of Tech stuff on the walls. A signed Jace Amaro jersey and things like that. I wonder if Jace ate there and paid with his friends credit card. LOL, remember that deal? Too soon? The place was clean but seemed old and tired like me. It could probably stand a make over at some point. The young guy who was cooking the pies brought us our pizza. He was very friendly and cordial unlike his co-worker who was not. The pizza was hot and good and much better than any chain pizzas we have in town. I put it on par with Dions and Italian Garden and Orlandos. It may not be better than any of those but it is right there with them. Only complaint might be that it was a bit thick on the crust although the crust was good. Could have maybe used a bit more cheese but I am getting really picky. It was a good pizza. Son went up front to get a to go box for our leftovers and they gave him a sack and a napkin. That made me laugh. He was like what do I do with this? haha.We stayed for awhile and listened to the young guy play his music and sing. I admire anyone who can do this. I should have tipped him and I regret that I didn’t. If I see him again I will do extra. There were no fit birds in case you were wondering. The singer’s wife and child were with him and she was pretty. I did not creep on her. That’s it. This is official frekview. God bless Giorgio. God bless singer I didn’t tip. God bless the bums down the street. God bless Tim Tadlock and Tech baseball team who are doing marvelous this year.
