Food was good, but service was horrible. Every waitress in the building was rude. Restrooms looked like they have NEVER been cleaned. Used to be the place we go to get good Mexican food. My family will not be returning to this place. Plenty more other great restaurants in the area that are much more appreciated to have my business.
I stopped by intending to eat a late lunch, but the bldg looked fairly run down and had iron bars on the windows. i’m not fussy about atmosphere, but in this condition i passed. they need a new location where they don’t need bars on their windows and they need to spruce up their bldg a tad.
Really, really good food!. The wife and I just finished a late lunch at Monterrey. Long time resident of NB, but first time visit to the cafe…yes, I feel like an idiot! Gosh, what we were missing all this time…great friendly service and outstanding food! Our waitress brought us our drinks, chips and salsa right away, but gave us time to look over the rather extensive menu. I ordered the Echilatas Poblanos which came with a green sauce and crema on the side. Rice, beans and side tortillas were included. Asked for the corn tortillas. My wife ordered the Chalupa plate, which also came with rice, beans and tortillas. The chips were average, much like the chips you get in any Mexican restaurant, however, the salsa (they give you a bowl and a big squeeze bottle of the salsa) was like no other I have had. It had a unique and addictive flavor…Epazote maybe? Whatever it was, it was good. The wife thoroughly enjoyed her plate, as did I. My poblano enchiladas were outstanding. I have never seen those on a menu before. Will definitely be going back for those!Saving the best for last, if you have never had home made corn tortillas before, you don’t know what you are missing! Light and almost fluffy, the roasted corn flavor was sublime. I would be perfectly happy with a plate of their great rice and beans and a short stack of those tortillas. Definitely worth the trip just for those!A word about the ambiance…do not let it discourage you. Yes, it looks like a dive outside, and the two room interior is not much better. That being said, the inside is clean, the service warm and friendly and, of course, the food is outstanding. Highly Recommended!!!
Poblano. Everything is very good at Monterrey. Really like the poblano enchiladas. Caldo is also very good. Barbacoa A+.
Excellent. Everything on the menu is excellent. Quick service, authentic. It’s a hole in the wall but those are the best places.
