Wow! Best food we have had in a long time. Highlights were the grilled Caesar salad, mussels, and mushroom risotto with truffle oil. Even the bread and dipping sauce was stellar. I’d skip the smoked chicken mac and cheese and the molten lava cake was a bit overdone, but overall 9.5 out of 10. Loved the patio and service.
Owner rude/ bad service. We went to Marcus Caf with three families (12 people including kids) on Friday night. It was not busy; there were tables open and no one ahead of us waiting to be seated. The hostess went to find a table but did not return for almost 10 minutes. No one came by to ask if we had been helped. When we were seated it was another 10 minutes before our waitress came to the table. She took our drink order and after 7-8 minutes we went to the bar to check on our order. The waitress brought the drinks to us (no apology) and took our food order. The busboy took bread to the table next to us that our kids were sitting at but not to us. Another 20 minutes with no waitress, no food and empty drinks we go to bar and order another round of drinks and check on our food. Two different waitresses start bringing our dinner out one plate at a time. It took 7 minutes for them to serve 11 plates of food. We told her we were still missing one plate of food and she went to go check on it (no apology). Another 10 minutes and we go to the bar to find the missing dish and find the waitress sitting at the bar talking to the bartending. We ask where our food is and she goes to look (no apology). She comes to the table and says they are making it now (no explanation or apology). We tell her not to worry about it because it is too late and we need to go. She brings us the check (with no apology) and has not offered to compensate anything. We tell her it would be nice if she compensated at least the appetizers and she says she will ask the owner. We look up and there is a very mad man stomping his way to our table. He said in a loud enough and hateful enough tone that it got our kids attention, Can I ask why you think you DESERVE your (2 for a total of $15.00) appetizers free We all so stunned by his aggression and attitude that it took a few seconds to be able to speak. We tried to explain to him how bad our dining experience was and he started yelling at us. He claimed that none of it ever happened. He would not let us explain. The vibe we got from him is that we were lucky to be dining in his establishment. He said he did not care how bad our experience was and that we were not welcomed back. The restaurant was not busy; we were not drunk, unruly or disrespectable customers. We were kind to the waitress even though she kept forgetting to wait us on us. The owner of Marcus Caf is beyond rude and very aggressive. To say we will not be back is an understatement.
Excellent food. Excellent service. Fair prices. Excellent patio. Where else do they know how to serve a hot cup of coffee in a HOT cup? It’s the little extras that make a place great and this place is great and yes a hidden jewel. Only down side was we spotted a rat walking a top the brick wall surrounding the patio at the start of our meal. A damper for sure. It’s an older neighborhood so I don’t know how they can fix this but it needs to be fixed.
Wonderful and awesome people. Very obliging about some dietary needs/allergies. We will definitely be back.
Awesome Food !. I was there last week and had the Portobello Stack.. wow .. it was to die for .. I have not had such a good meal in a very very long time … I will be back to sample more for sure ! Staff were very helpful and explained what was in the dish and I felt very relaxed and at ease in the place. Next time I will take a photo .. i wanted to share with friends .. and I have NEVER even thought of taking a photo of a dish before … before now !
What a place!. More often than not I go out to eat and end up disappointed. I spend way too much money for food I could have made better at home, but didn’t have the time or energy to do so. For the first time in a long time I had a meal out that lived up to and actually surpassed my expectations. This was the first time any of us had been here. The other writers were correct in that it is hidden and almost lost in the small European looking shopping center. We decided to eat out on the patio, but noted how nice the inside looked with table cloths and water goblets on the tables. Date night? 🙂 The service was lovely and appropriately slow – in other words – not rushed. We spent almost a couple of hours and enjoyed 3 courses without even realizing it!We each had something different with the plan to share everything becuase everything on the menu sounded great. The spinach and artichoke dip was one of the best I’ve had. The chicken and gouda lasagna lived up to all of the other reviews and the server’s recommendation. The croque monsour was wonderful and buttery on great bread. The lunch special of the chicken and spinach wrap was suprisingly spicy and I loved it. The strawberry shortcake was not the typical southern type, but a layered cake with strawberries and whipped cream (with mascarpone maybe?) and a wonderful strawberry sauce.I can’t imagine having a bad meal here. I can’t wait to bring my husband!
I like the patio. I tried this place for the first time with my family. I’ll admit, we came for the patio because the weather outside was beautiful. But we enjoyed the service as well. Our waiter was friendly and attentive and water glasses were refilled regularly. My grilled caesar salad was terrific. The entres weren’t bad, but the florentine and stuffed poblano pepper were a little too bland for our tastes. The menu was broad…but mostly italian in nature. We’ll be back and try something else next time.
