So, Goodson’s Cafe, home of the famous Chicken Fried Steak??? Flavorless, hard crusted cardboard. I’ve lived in Texas my whole life where Chicken Fried Steak has always been a Texas staple in most cafes. The cream gravy was flavorless as well. The meat was as thin as a What-a-burger meat patty! The sides were all canned and the mashed potatoes were from scratch but very dense. The service was just ok. If you’re looking to just fill your stomach without regard to your taste bud’s, then give this place a try. Food Network, you missed the mark!
Fudge Brownie Sundae. Food was amazing. We came on a Saturday night with a packed house and only waited 15 minutes. The service was great and the food was even better! Adding this place to my list of favs the next time I’m in Tomball, TX
Not what it used to be. The food doesn’t taste like it is prepared from scratch…Green Beans taste canned…Just doesn’t live up the Hype from many years ago.
Chicken, not steak in this case. We dined here for dinner and started with the onion rings. They were good but with slightly less and lighter batter they would have been exceptional. Entrees ordered were the Chicken Fried Steak, Chicken Fried Chicken and the BBQ Shrimp and Onions. The CFS was good and very large despite the small being ordered but the CFC was far better. I was amazed at how good the CFC was. I would have much rather order that than the CFS. The BBQ shrimp and onions was disgusting and a total waste of money. Visions of Pascal Manales BBQ shrimp was the thought in my husbands head when he ordered this but was no where even close in reality. The sides of mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, cole slaw and french fries were all good. The desserts were absolutely delicious. We ordered the peach cobbler and the banana pudding and loved every bite. We will be returning in the future.
My expectations were to high, but when you claim the best chicken fry in Texas I would hope you’re at least near it. Cfs was all crust looked more like steak fingers stuck together. The sides Mac and cheese and corn taste just like they came from furs. I can say the dinner rolls were great.
It’s O.K.. Went to Goodsons Cafe today for lunch. I had the large chicken fried steak, eat some here and take some home. For the sides it was squash and cole slaw and a side of onion rings. IMHO big does not equal good. I have run into this situation before where they have a big CFS that’s suppose to be the best thing you ever ate but turns out to be just ok. Seems like there is more batter than meat. But anyway, CFS was ok, cole slaw was ok, squash was ok, and the onion rings were ok. What was really exceptional was their rolls. They were light, they were fluffy, they were delicious! But then again, man doesn’t live on bread alone. All in all, I’ve had worse so I’d probably go back.
So So. I agree with another poster on here that Goodson’s is riding on their past success. Nowhere near the best chicken fried steak in Texas, not even the best in Tomball, Mell’s is far better. Bland veggies and mashed potatoes, mediocre gravy, and just not very impressive. It’s not horrible, it’s actually a nice family restaurant, just don’t expect stellar food.
