Whenever there is a new German restaurant in the area we absolutely must visit. Im 100% German and grew up in a German speaking house. I also spent 7 years of my adult life in Germany, so I know a little about German food. We visited the newly opened Heidis Corner on a Saturday afternoon and when we were seated we were the only people in the restaurant. Our waitress was good and provided excellent service and answered all our questions. The food was, for the most part, authentic and well-prepared. We ordered the fried mushrooms as an appetizer and they were delicious. I cant say whether they were authentic or not but I enjoyed them tremendously. We then had our main course; jaeger schnitzel (breaded pork loin with mushroom gravy), bratkartoffeln (German home fried potatoes) and salad. In addition, in an attempt to gain the full experience, we ordered a bratwurst and brotchen (German hard roll) on the side. Before ordering the brotchen I specifically asked the waitress if the brotchen were authentic and she said they were. This gave me great pleasure because this just wasnt something usually found in the U.S. The salad was a simple green salad with some carrot slices and red onions with a vinaigrette dressing. It tasted alright, but this is not your typical German salad. When I think of the typical German salad Im drawn to a cucumber salad made with thin cucumber slices or a finely chopped lettuce. Either way it usually has a dressing made with some combination of vinegar and half n half. The big thing is there is a creamy consistency to the dressing, theirs didnt have that. Now the jaeger schnitzel was very well prepared. It was thin and the breading was outstanding, it was cooked to perfection. I couldnt have asked for much more; other than a little more of the jaeger sauce (mushroom gravy). The portion was very good as well. The bratkartoffeln tasted good, however they did not have the consistency I so very much love about them. True bratkartoffeln should be boiled first and then fried with onions and bacon, these were not boiled first and had very little onion and no bacon. They tasted like normal home fried potatoes, good but they werent true bratkartoffeln. The bratwurst was very good and served with an authentic German mustard. No complaints here! Now the brotchen was a complete disappointment. I am very big on bread and the Germans make the best brotchen around and what makes them so good is their hard shell matched with a very light and tender inside. This is very difficult to do and to be fair Ive never had a true brotchen here in the US of A. However, they did tell me it was authentic and this wasnt even close. I took one bite and didnt touch the rest. Now the dessert was the real deal. We had a slice of German sponge cake with fruit and it was exactly as I remembered it growing up. It was even topped with a homemade whipped cream. Not sweet like American desserts, but perfect.Overall it was a valiant effort that would have deserved at least 4 out of 5 stars, just because they tried. What made it a 3 for me was the fact that the owner never approached us to gain any feedback on our experience. She was in the dining area the entire time we were there and yet never seemed concerned or interested in how we felt about the dining experience. A big no-no for me and not a good sign for the future of this establishment.
