Mom and Pop Mexican style. The first thing I always notice when walking into a restaurant is the cleanliness or lack thereof. Los Compadres is always very clean. Their clientele is mostly Hispanic, always a good sign of authentic Mexican food. Their chicken has wonderful seasoning and perfectly grilled. I usually order chicken nachos. They have more meat, veggies and cheese than chips. It’s about 6.00 but it is easily shared with someone else. My husband loves the Pozole but is usually only served on weekends. The tamales are also good. In fact we have never ordered anything that we didn’t like.
It had been a long time, so I checked it out, and brought Lady yclops along. They’ve expanded into the next space, so the dining ares has more than doubled. They’ve also put in a couple of large projection TVs, so it would be a great place to watch a futbol game. The salsa bar is pretty good – they had five or six different salsas, ranging from a creamy-tangy avocado salsa, to a smoky black chile salsa. Very flavorful. My wife tried the burrito norteno and liked it. It was less meaty than I remember…mostly beans and rice…but she liked that. There were a few stray bits of fatty carnitas she didn’t care for, though.I tried the asada plate, since it was on their list of specialties. Very good. The carne asada was very well-marinated and tangy-savory. They served it with lightly grilled onions, very rich beans, rice, and some avocado, along with five small tortillas. I’d get this again in a second.Took the Lady back (at her request) a few weeks later. She tried the enchiladas suisas (quite good) and I got the carnitas plate (Saturday special). Gotta tell ya, those were the best carnitas I’ve had in years. Crispy, chewy and mind-blowingly porky. Dunno if every carnitas plate is this good, but I’m gonna find out. In any case, that pushed this place onto my favorites list.22 May, 2012Solid taco shop. It’s been a while since I’ve been here, so my recollection may be a bit hazy, but I liked it. The dishes that stand out are:The burrito norteno: pork and beans smothered in a terrific-ly tangy green chile sauce and cheese. One of the best smothered burritos I’ve had in a long time. Huge. The pork was different the four times I had this. Twice, it was carnitas-like and chewy-crispy-porky (though, yeah, there may be a bit of gristle here and there…be a man and deal with it). That was fantastic. The other two times it was more bland, like sauteed pork loin. Still decent, but not great. It looks like they do carnitas only on the weekends, so that’s when to get the good version (sometimes on Monday they still have leftovers). The carnitas tacos were terrific. Nice and porky and fatty and delicious. A little bit of gristle, but nothing bad.The chilaquiles with eggs were very good. Potent red sauce.I remember liking several of the tacos, but don’t recall much detail. I don’t think I liked the asada, and I remember not liking the sopes., but on the whole, I liked this place.I should go back soon.
