Love this place! I’ve been to lots of Sushi restaurants and I always end up comparing it to Happy Sumo. I don’t know if I’ve ever tried a bad roll here. In fact, I rarely eat the same thing because I’m always happy with all the other choices, and there are A LOT of choices. I’m always surprised at how little I wait at such a popular restaurant. Plus, there’s always the option of sitting at the bar and getting your food quickly. The managers, hostesses and wait staff are always really friendly and helpful with suggestions. But, if you’re at a loss for what to order, the Vegas Roll will never disappoint. Love the Orem Happy Sumo!!!
Better Than Average But Not The Best. I’ve had very expensive sushi, I’ve had all-you-can-eat-make-you-sick sushi, I’ve had store-bought sushi, I’ve had pretty much all types and prices of sushi without actually going to Japan (but I’m hoping to this year!)Happy Sumo for me is about a 7 out of 10 for Utah sushi bars. The rolls are all pretty good, but they still don’t have that out-of-this-world taste that other sushi bars seem to create. This past time we visited we had the Surf & Turf Roll (the steak was burned), Samurai Roll (one of my favorites), and Mango Mamma Roll (very good if you like fruit). The price reflects the better quality so expect to pay around $10-15 per roll. The atmosphere is nicer than most since it’s an actual restaurant and NOT a throw-up-some-decorations in a strip mall and call it good restaurant. The waiters/waitresses are generally all good-looking college-aged kids and they run around quietly doing their jobs so no complaint on the service.I’ve never had much more than a 15-20 minute wait no matter what time of day or night and it’s much more conducive to business meetings if you’re looking to impress and still get decent food.
Horrible service, our waitress checked out before she got to work and was just going through the motions. Sushi was ok, but over rated and priced.
Strike 3. We loved the Gateway location when it first opened. Lately we’ve had problems. Strike one was on a lunch visit, we ordered crab cake appetizer and I had the Fuji Chicken, my favorite. The crab cakes came out cold in the middle and seemed to have alot of residual grease. It seems they were leftover from the day before and reheated in a deep fryer? The Fuji Chicken had burned parts that tasted bad. Strike two, a dinner service was terribly slow, drinks not refilled until we were to leave and the food was not very hot. Strike three this weekend was in Provo. Service went well, but the steak my husband ordered tasted bad. Bad as in contaminated. He ran to the bathroom and spit it out. They took care of it immediately and apologized, but we are really just tired of the disappointments. We really hope both restaurants take stock and kick up their efforts. We really want them to get back to the basics like when they first opened. Why do so many restaurants let quality fall away once they have been open awhile? Please work on this Happy Sumo!
Go with a VIP voucher. My husband and I are members of the VIP club so we regularly go and get the sushi for half price. The service is pretty slow, however, it’s understandable when the restaurant is packed because it’s VIP time. We love the sushi. They’re one of the few places that make it hot like we like it, and when’s it’s 50% off it can’t be beat.
Best Sushi for the price. This place is our favorite in Provo! We love most of the sushi options, especially the vegas roll. We could eat that roll all day long. And while there are better places (like Shoga in Orem), they don’t have nearly as good of prices. The fact that several days a week, if you simply join the VIP club online, you can have 2 for 1 sushi, makes it the only place we go. So no, this is not amazing sushi, but yes, it is really good and well worth the price when you go on 2 for 1 night.
Great food terrible service. My husband and I have been here twice and we love the food, but the service was SO awful. They were out of half of the things on the menu both times ( we went a Saturday and a Monday) and both times we waited for 40 minutes for our food. Our waitress was nonexistent and when we reached the point of starving and ordered an appetizer while we waited, we had to finally flag another waiter down to help us. The food is good, but we won’t be going back because of the horrendous service.
