User reviews. This used to be my favorite place. Great food and excellent service. Now, the food is not consistent, sometimes awful and the service is perfunctory at best. Don’t know why is changed but wouldn’t recommend it any longer
Excellent Meal and Wonderful Ambiance! Wonderful!!!!! Everything about this restaurant was great!
Sunday Brunch. We just had a great brunch at Em’s. It was my first time there and will be back again! Coffee is self serve, but was so tasty I didn’t mind at all.
Disappointing Late Valentine’s at Em’s. I had only enjoyed Em’s brunch before taking my fiancee out for a belated Valentine’s dinner. After last night and the bill, I’ll be thinking twice about going there for dinner again as it was a 50/50 experience. The service was friendly, but it was obvious they were short-handed (though I had a 6:30 reservation) because water and soda refills were slim. We started by sharing an appetizer and a salad – the chipotle tamales and the sausage salad. The tamales were small and so very lightly sauced that they were bland and had us scraping the plate for any flavor; the salad, on the other hand, was delicious (but what with Italian sausage isn’t?). Next came my potato lasagna and her pine nut and goat cheese stuffed chicken breast. Mine was unique and delicious; hers was again bland, with too little goat cheese for any real flavor, a few pine nuts, and dry meat. She didn’t finish. To end, we had the molten chocolate cake and the bread pudding. The former was baked too long, so there was nothing ‘molten’ about it, while the latter was very tasty. The coffee tasted like it was strained through a paper towel, and I never received my second cup (again, friendly but strained service). Then came the check, with tip, that was just under $100.Over all, had I ordered the salad, the lasagna, and the bread pudding, I would have left feeling satisfied. But with half of our orders pretty much sub-par, sketchy service for such a small place, and still paying nearly $100 for two (and we don’t drink!), I’ll be sticking with Em’s for their brunch menu from now on.
Good food – confusing service. I would go back for the food. The service was poor. They clear the tables very slow. They don’t bring you coffee. They can not be bothered to split the check. Remember: you are working for tips and should accommodate your customers. Like I said before I would go back for food.
Civilized. Needed to eat a very early dinner near the Capitol. Ordered a salmon/crab appetizer, gnocchi, and short ribs. All had fine flavor although rib dish (served with mashed potatoes and vegetables) could have used more contrast in texture. Meals include salad. Pecan bread pudding did have nice texture contrast. Staff obliging in helping us meet appointment time; general atmosphere that of a refined neighborhood bistro. Quiet at 5:00.UPDATE APRIL 2013: Lovely brunch of salmon on potato pancake with creme fraiche and a veggie fritatta. Only downer was a doughy cinnamon roll with too much goo and not enough spice. Very civilized ambiance.
Just Ok. My two friends and I went in without a reservation. The place was dead with about 3 tables taken and the staff seemed confused and unsure as to whether they could accommodate us. After asking three different people they finally determined they could help us. I still dont understand why they acted so put out; when we left an hour and a half later the place was still dead. Service was slow- only three waiters with no bar tenders and no hostess. The food was really good, but the portions are pretty small. I actually like the idea of smaller food with great distinctive flavors versus a lot of food with compromised flavors. Overall: Food Great, service lacking If you dont get to go to a fine dining restuarant often then I suggest Zy before Em’s. If you are a frequent fine diner I would totally suggest trying Em’s
