I had a business dinner at the New Yorker the other evening and was so disappointed. 3 of us ordered the Fisherman’s stew. For nearly $40, one might expect more than half a crab leg, a few mussels and clams, 3 or 4 shrimp and 2 tiny scallops oh, and few calamari tentacles. But no. It was just as well that there was a paucity of seafood because everything was grossly over cooked (to the point of being rubbery). I should have known better than to order seafood at a Gastronomy restaurant because they can’t even do it right at their seafood restaurants. My 2 colleagues who had the fish stew were equally annoyed at the quality of the dish. Shame on the New Yorker. Seriously! To be fair, service was excellent and my colleagues who got other dishes didn’t complain. However, there were no raves either. I might go back if I needed a private room and every other private room in town is booked.
Wonderful Evening! Thanks Eric!. Let me start by saying my boyfriend and I have worked in the fine dining industry for the last five years, we know what good food and service is! We are young and most of the time when we go to dine in an expensive restaurant we are not treated as valued customers and for us, this is very disappointing considering we DO know the inside and out of fine dining (He worked in the back of the house as a sous chef, and I the front, as a host/server).**The New Yorker however, exceeded our expectations, and then some!**We made reservations a week in advance and asked in the notes to be placed in a quite romantic setting as we were celebrating our move from Sacramento California to the Salt Lake City area. We had reservations at 7 but arrived a little early to enjoy drinks at the bar. My boyfriend ordered an extra dirty martini and was not disappointed! I had a Bloody Mary with Wills Homemade Bloody Mary Mix and Stolichnaya Vodka, and it was perfect, came with a lemon slice, celery, and a large shrimp, it was spicy but not too much!! We spoke with a man sitting at the bar who worked at the visitors center up the street, and he advised us about places to visit since we are new to town. It was a lovely introduction to the evening. About half way through our drinks our bartender told us our table was ready, and seated us in a wonderful corner booth in the middle section of the restaurant. It was quiet and romantic, just what we wanted. Our servers name was Eric, and he was very attentive and a great server! He told us right off the bat about the specials (Oysters on the half shell with a champagne mignonette, Red and Gold beet salad with blue cheese and bacon on a bed of baby kale and arugula with a warm whole grain mustard dressing, Sole on a bed of green beans with capers, and olives) and then asked us for our drink order. I had the Bellini (Mionetto Prosecco, White Peach Puree and Peach Schnapps) which was the best Bellini I have ever had in a restaurant!! My boyfriend ordered a glass of the Rancho Zabaco, Zinfandel from Sonoma Heritage Vines, California, 2012 which we both enjoyed. I normally do not drink Reds as they are too bold for me, but this was very subdue and had lots of POP! We ended up ordering a bottle of this later in the meal, but I think the bottle was a 2013.For our shared appetizer we opted for the Oysters, which were AMAZING, melt in your mouth texture! They came with a cocktail sauce and of course the very tasty champagne mignonette. We also ordered the Sauted Wild Mushrooms and Brie with Garlic Butter, Sherry and Toast Points, which was also very delicious. The brie was warmed just a bit so it was very soft. We wiped the plate clean!!For our second appetizer course we tried the Steak Tartare (Chopped Filet Mignon, Capers, Cornichon, Red Onion, Farm Egg and Toast) and the Coconut-Panko Crab Cake (With Curry-Avocado-Mango Salsa). I personally was not a fan of the crab cake, but my boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed it more so than the Tartare. Both items were plated beautifully. The tartare comes with an egg yolk on a half shell and I was very pleased that it was separate from the actual meat when presented! This means you can choose to have it or not, which of course I did!! Can’t have tartare without egg yolk! The meat was seasoned to perfection with capers and cornichons. It was my favorite part of the meal!! Would certainly recommend the tartare, and order it any time in the future when I return! My boyfriend said that the crab cakes were his favorite and would order them again and recommend them to anyone! For our salad course we both opted for the special Beet salad with blue cheese and bacon, we were not disappointed! It was a wonderful break before our entrees. For our main meal my boyfriend ordered the 14oz. Char-Grilled Rib Eye Steak Medium Rare, and I ordered the 9oz. Filet Mignon of Beef (With Gorgonzola-Panko Crust, Mushroom Jus and Mashed Potatoes) Medium Rare. The Rib eye normally comes with a choice of side and sauce Barnaise, but he asked if he could have it with the Filet presentation, which they were happy to accommodate. When we got our meals I first tried the Mashed potatoes with mushroom jus, and it was fabulous, very peppery but a perfect combination. My steak was pan seared (I think?) and cooked to perfection, beautiful red center fading to pink with a very thin cooked rim. My boyfriends rib eye was a little on the rare side, and our server noticed it was a little undercooked and offered to take it back to the kitchen. Us being who we are, refused as my boyfriend knew he would be able to eat it just fine with it being a little more rare than he would have liked. It was still a very tasty steak! The Gorgonzola-Panko Crust was a wonderful addition to the steaks! It added a nice little crunch which was just perfect. By this time we were pretty full, and only able to eat about half our steaks. When Eric came to take our entree plates, he offered to box them up, which we did, and told us he had spoken with his manager (Cindy) and because we had refused to let him take the steak back and cook it just a little bit more, he was going to buy us dessert! How thoughtful! We would have ordered dessert anyhow, even if he hadn’t opted to purchase one for us, but it was a very nice gesture, and shows that the staff is serious about providing the best service possible!!There was a special for dessert, but I forget what it was because it was not what we decided to order. We did order two espressos and the Black Turtle Sunday which came with candied pecans (house made!) and house made caramel and chocolate sauce with vanilla ice cream. It was good, but let me tell you I didn’t finish…In the middle of my dessert, my boyfriend proposed to me!! And I said yes! :DWhen we told Eric he congratulated us and we thanked him for providing such a wonderful setting for us to start our new journey together!! As most restaurants are, he passed our good news along to the manager Cindy, who then came over and congratulated us herself, and spent some time talking to us. It was a very nice gesture! We told her how much we enjoyed where we were seated and she said she would put our preferred table in the notes of our reservation so that when we return if that table is available we can be seated there, so sweet!! It has a special meaning to us now, so it was wonderful she would go above and beyond to make sure every time we come it is just as special! Even as we were leaving the staff congratulated us on our new engagement! Before we left we were also offered to join their frequent diners club which you can accumulate points based off of how much money you spend and get gift cards with up to $20 off for your next meal, we signed up because why not!? They made our first night so wonderful for us, I can’t wait to go back!! They also send out card around your birthday for a special treat! How wonderful! Overall, we had a beautiful dinner full of flavor and would go back in a heat beat! If you are looking for a very high end restaurant that has delicious food, drinks and a wonderful staff, this is it. Thank you to everyone who made our night so special…Visited May 2015
I had the pepper steak. I order medium rare with the hand cut special fries. It was a bloody mass of grisel with frozen fries. I couldn’t eat but a couple of bites. The apple salad had no apples. Horrible!! Also expensive.
Mediocre…at best. First of all this place needs a makeover. As I walked a mile to get here I develped an expectation, an expectation of a New York Steakhouse, which is reasonable given their name. What I found was a brightly lit place with tables packed in like a Starbucks. The last point is particularly interesting because there are not more than a dozen people here, they have 100+ seats more than they need. I had the lobster tails (which sounds exorbitant until you compare the 8 oz filet $42 to the two Maine lobster tails $44). They were good, that’s all. Would definitely try the Marketplace Oyster bar upstairs (packed) next time.
DON’T GO HERE. I don’t ever write reviews but I have to sound the alarm on this place. Mediocre at best. Weak service. Poor atmosphere (bright and noisy). At the price, I’m expecting some high quality food if nothing else. We had the filet and the pasta/lobster dish. Both mediocre/bland/overcooked. Honestly I wish I hadn’t eaten here. Waste of time and an intended classy dinner experience, not to mention the money. I love good food and don’t mind paying for it, but I HATE paying any amount of money for mediocre food. Looking at some of the good reviews this place has gotten, they look more like advertisements, and I wonder who really wrote them. In a city with many great food options, this place is a major disappointment.
FOOD, DRINK, SERVICE. Delicious steak. Outstanding bartender and martini! Best of all, the hostess ALLISON. Gorgeous, professional, just amazing.
Great if you can get there. The atmosphere, staff and food are all excellent. Unfortunately, accessibility is sad and impossible. One in our party had a leg brace and was able to access the restaurant, but had to not only go down two flights of stairs, but maneuver the obstacle of close tables and steps within the restaurant. So, my recommendation is for the healthy and able, it is a romantic, wonderful place. For the rest of us, I think there are accessible restaurants in the area for the same price, service, and quality.
