A great place ruined. I was excited when my husband and I decided we’d go to lunch at Pho Green Papaya recently. I enjoy getting their lunch combo which includes soup, sprouts salad, veggies, shrimp rolls, eggrolls and a main entre.Unfortunately it seems their recent remodeling, has also included a restructuring of their restaurant. This was a very bad decision that has cost them my business. The lovely sit down restaurant now only has a sliver of the same menu offerings. The once warm red room with high benches, is now just a step above a cafeteria with cold white walls and average tables. Before the menu was a few pages long and also included descriptions of the food items. The new menu is just one page full of pictures and no descriptions of what is included in each meal. You also now order at a counter like fast food.My husband and I couldn’t order even a fraction of some of the favorites we used to enjoy and we’re looking forward to enjoying on our visit. The cashier said the changes were made so that food was done faster and that it was now cheaper for the customers. I don’t agree with either of those statements. This meal was more money for the amount of food received and took longer to arrive at our table, despite there only being four parties in the entire facility. All of the parties being of only two people each.I would have paid a few dollars more for the old lunch combo, if the price was hitting them, but I wouldn’t pay a dime to get my recent meal again. Every other time I went there for lunch the place was always crowded with business professionals. Now the place is empty with a few stranglers. In the old settings, we always had our soup right away. Then exactly as we finished it the rest of the meal arrived. The only thing this place needed before the remodel was maybe some new dining ware/place settings and new seat covers for the booths. It took 15 minutes for our two eggrolls (actually spring rolls) to be brought to our table. My husband and I practically ordered the same item, but his was brought to the table at least five minutes before they decided to bring mine. The food was mediocre at best when it arrived and almost flavorless. I wasn’t even sure some of my chicken was fully cooked. They took a great place and ruined it.When we tried to visit over the summer, during the remodel, a restaurant in the same complex was selling their food, but only a few items. If you wish to be fast food, why not continue doing that (which the other place is still advertising) and have Pho Green Papaya as the nice sit down restaurant it was and should be. The setup and food were both perfect before. This place WAS above and beyond not only my favorite Vietnamese restaurant, but my favorite Asian cuisine in Utah. Now with the new food and restructuring, my husband and I will never visit again.Have a good time with the new thinning shady crowd.
I loved the old Green Papaya, but was disappointed with its new incarnation. The pad Thai tasted so greasy, the pho had no flavor, and was served without basil, bean sprouts, and jalapeo. I miss the green papaya salad, the panang red curry, the yummy pho, the ribs…it used to be so good!
