Having just left one bakery in the middle of town, we now were in search of one that we had never heard of… and couldn’t pronounce. It’s just a good thing that we didn’t have to ask someone where it was.Bakkerij Krijnen is on the eastern edge of town and shouldn’t be missed. It’s entrance is through a door off its small parking lot, but there is also room to park along the street. Just like the bakery on the other side of town, this one too has you enter first through an area that is not the bakery’s display area. It actually seems more like their storage area with a coat rack, a magazine stand, a small, high, round table devoid of chairs, and a poster board announcing what’s going on locally. The first thing you see when you enter the main bakery area is a display case filled with attractive goodies. There are danishes, croissants, turnovers, large cookies, mini Linzer tortes, and what has become a huge new favorite of mine, crackle cookies.Everything we were purchasing here we planned on taking home to eat later since we had just munched at another bakery on the other side of town. We selected a Crackle Cookie ($2.50), a ten pack of Dutch Stroopwafels ($10), an Almond Croissant ($3), and a loaf of Olive Sourdough bread. The only disappointment was the croissant. It didn’t seem fresh, but that was likely because it did not get eaten until the next day. I guess I should have first heated it up to refresh it.The almond filling was delicious. The Crackle Cookies are delicious. Almost like a chewy, brownie cookie with confectionery sugar on top, the chocolate flavor in these cookies is fantastic. The Stroopwafels may be a new weakness in my diet. Thank goodness I don’t live any closer. These are wafer-thin waffle sandwiches with a caramel filling. YUM! Whether you eat them cold or pop them in the microwave for a few seconds, they are addictive. The nicest thing about buying a loaf of bread here is that you can have it sliced and choose how thick you want each slice to be. There is a choice of six different thicknesses ranging from 13mm=1/2 inch, to 38mm = 1.5 inch. We chose 16mm= 5/8 inch and froze the loaf after we tried some upon arriving home. The bread is not overly sour, just enough to notice. The olives add a really good flavor, but watch out for any pits. I found one.Service is very friendly, willing to explain anything you might not be familiar with. Definitely worth the trip if you don’t live nearby.
This bakery rocks!. The exterior of the building disguises hides treasures inside. Hans Krijnen is a European-trained master, and his passion is reflected in his baked goods. The breads are organic with a body and taste not elsewhere exceeded. The pastries are amazing. You will not find a bakery that exceeds Krijnen’s quality, taste, or passion for doing it right.
Bread Alone. This is the little bakery that can. This is real bread in the northern European tradition which seeks to please not only the palate. Every aspect of Krijnen’s bread is perfect: how it tastes, feels, smells; the texture, its ability to satisfy. For those who hunger for real bread and real nutrition, Bakkerij Krijnen is a beacon of hope. They say you can’t live by bread alone, but if I had to try this is the place I would go.It is open too, despite what the web might say.
