I have been to Rocksalt many times. The one thing that is important to remember is that this place is a Raw Bar. The only truly successful dishes we have ordered here are the raw oysters and fries. The only time to really order those is during Happy Hour. Staff and service is generally very good. However, anytime we have ordered something other than oysters or fries the food has been disappointing. I have had dry or overcooked food. The other issue is that the price of the food for the quality/quantity received does not seem to match up. I give this place 4* based simply on service, oysters, and fries. Stick with that and you can’t go wrong.
Not impressed. Salad was great! Cold shrimp was overcooked. Soup had unappealing look but tasted good. Muscles wereA disaster. They were flavorless and gritty. Hamburger was also a disappointment. The meat was overworked and had too much gristle and very dry although it was ordered medium.
Rocksalt….. you nailed it.. We decided to venture to Rocksalt for the first time on a Monday night. Our server, Amy, took fantastic care of us. She knew the bar and she knew the menu very well and offered fitting suggestions based off our main entrees. We started with our drinks; the best Old Fashioned I’ve probably ever tasted, no exaggeration, and a simple glass of Chianti Rufina. Next, they brought out oysters on the half shell, served on a bed of ice and salt, and two dressings and lemon wedges. It was honestly just awesome to look at. For the main course, I ordered the New York Strip, served on a roasted shallot demi-glaze. It. Was. Insane. I do not typically like my steaks served with any type of sauce or glaze… but this, was out of this world. It was rich and buttery, but not at all over powering. On the side, a buttermilk mash, made with Yukon golds and a house-made buttermilk. All sides are served a la carte, but definitely a good value. We could have easily split the sides between us.Sam ordered the Rainbow trout, served with crushed Rocksalt around the plate. He noted that the burst of salt paired perfectly with the fish. His side was creamed rice grits with a smoked mushroom tomato gravy. I hate grits, and these actually were very appealing. Sam downed them in minutes. Would you care for any dessert?…. Um, yes? Flourless Chocolate Cake topped with a toasted marshmallow. I’m coming back just to eat this. Alone if I have to. Incredible. The marshmallow didn’t make much sense, it was very difficult to eat on top of the cake. But it was so good we just ate it with our hands at the end. The cake was dense and rich but somehow not filling…. a mystery. Without a doubt will be returning. Finally Cville brought in a worth-while seafood joint!-Cville Food Critic
Disappointing. I’m usually lenient and generous with my restaurant visits. Occasional blunders happen and I understand. I didn’t hate this restaurant, but I did not feel that what the final bill came to reflected the service and food quality that we received. Our waitress was nice enough, but we didn’t see much of her. The manager came by after we had gotten our food to ask if everything was going well and I had to ask him for a drink refill since I hadn’t had one yet. My boyfriend ordered some lamb dish and when he bit into it, the food was basically cold. I ordered the New York Strip and asked for it cooked medium. Half of it was medium, the other half was more like medium rare. We ordered asparagus, and that was the only thing was cooked correctly I feel. Our bill came out to $70. Not worth it in my opinion.
