Evening star did not dazzle!. I read several positive reviews in the Washington Post before eagerly venturing out to The Evening Star Restaurant in Del Ray. What a disappointment! They either ran out of food, time, or both. I think the Washington Post needs to revisit this place before they say another positive word about it! I definitely won’t be back!
Small servings on big plates. We tried the Evening Star a few years back and found it delightful. Unfortunately, I believe the accolades and critic reviews have gone to the owners head. The menu description of the dinners are misleading – a mash of vegetables whether potatoes or celery root implies just that – a portion of vegetable mash that is along side the main item, in this case a tiny serving of over-salted Mahi Mahi . When inquired why the celery mash was left out, I was informed that it was a puree sauce which was lightly drizzled under the few miserly pieces of fish (3 tiny filets) The paltry amount of Lima beans (I counted ten) were so under cooked I had problems piercing them with my fork. The asparagus, which one expects to see as several spears, were overcooked and a few tiny pieces that I was sure the chef ran out and tried to divide 3 spears amongst 3 diners. In short, if you leave a restaurant hungry and dissatisfied, the restaurant fails to live up to it’s goal. If it’s goal is little food at inflated prices, then it has succeeded. Del Ray delightful! An earl…. Del Ray delightful!An early seating on a pleasant Thursday evening. Outside tables were full but plenty if seats inside. Service was excellent tonight as was the Lost Rhino Cask ale IPA. Started with a Ceasar Salad which was fresh with a very nice dressing. The fried chicken with greed smashed potatoes and gravy was hot, tender, and very tasty – a bit more spice than I expected but still very good. I will be back to try another southern style meal!!!!

Great back bar to have a couple cocktails before dinner. Small, intimate dining room and got our table immediately on a Fri night. Fried chicken and mashed potatoes were fantastic and don’t miss the red velvet cheesecake…
We live in Del Ray and eat occasionally at Evening Star but had not been there since they upgraded the decor. We decided to eat upstairs in the bar area where it’s a bit quieter. We ordered shrimp and grits, a beet salad and Mac and cheese. All dishes were mediocre and the shrimp and grits were downright bad. 4 shrimp on top of soupy tasteless grits with supposedly a Cajun tomato sauce which tasted more like ketchup. The beet salad was too oily, over dressed and the beets over cooked. The Mac and cheese was the best dish but we felt it wasn’t tangy enough. Overall, a very disappointing culinary experience for a restaurant that charges such high prices. Will not go back.
