Wandering in here, was sort of a good accident. I was looking for some decent breakfast and found it. Between their delicious espressos and their yummy breakfast, I kind of love this place. Try a chocolate croissant or get the breakfast sandwich. Both are definitely a win. The coffee is great too. Also, pick up some gourmet cheese or a snack for later! They also have wine, but I didn’t peruse the grocery section all that well.
Really overpriced unfortunately.
Fantastic cakes. If you have a sweet tooth, you should definitely try out the Society Fair cakes and bars. They’ll generally have a seasonal favorite, as well as basic cakes, cookies, etc. After one slice of their enormous coconut or chocolate cake, you’ll be hooked.
Nice setting. True it is a little slow but this is the style of dining. I had the charcuterie plate – delish! Wine was pricey considering some of the options were Virginia or blends, but they had breathed well and were smooth. I would return for those meats and cheeses
Our Situation: Pre-Arranged Ladies’ NightEvery sandwich and cheese plate was delicious. For me, this place was a treat for the eyes and the palate. The decor is quite adorable and unique. The lab beakers at the bar overlooked by a framed animal skin on the wall pretty much summed up my life and education: biology and chemistry, with hints of Europe thrown up all over the place. Of course I would have loved just sitting at the bar drinking water! We all enjoyed a flight of red wines, served by a sommelier who was more than happy to answer my wine dummy questions sans airs. Some of the staff were not knowledgeable about our cheeses, so I have to deduct a point for that. Sorry, young cheese servers: blue cheese is very different from any cousin of Parmesan! The shop part was a delight to peek at, the ambience was noisy, but 99% of that was our group. I can see it being noisy in there no matter what kind of groups wine or dine in. You definitely can’t gossip to your bestie without going to the restroom or stepping outside. A reviewer mentioned maybe this place was only for those under 25 or those who are not experienced eaters. I have to disagree. That night, our over 30 group of young professionals ranging from housewives to attorneys to active duty female army officers- all who travel the world and frequent DC’s yummiest- had a lovely time! The restaurant’s age average must have been 35 that night. If you would like to talk about wine with someone who will not be annoyed with any question you have, Society Fair’s sommelier is a very personable and non intimidating guy to chat with. Maybe they have more than one sommelier. I don’t know. I made it a point to walk in there knowing nothing about this gem. Their sauces, breads, cheeses, and turkey avocado sandwich all were so yummy. I would definitely return. And, I will append/revise this review if my second trip turns out to be the opposite. Group of 10-12: served wellAppetizer/Bar Menu: YumAmbience/Decor: Adorable- a melange of pretty, fun, and the bar decorated with vessels that refer to the basics of food and wine: chemistry.Staff: Super friendlyCost: $35 for five glasses of wine (we had flights, but these glasses were generously filled) and a full plate of a large sandwich I had to share to prevent waste. I only scanned the snack and share menu, and the prices were not outrageous.3.75/5 stars
Charming setting. Went for lunch and had The Classic – grilled cheese and tomato soup. Very good. Friendly staff, good service. Bought some delicious graham crackers for dessert.
BAD SERVICE! The food looked great, but that fact is overshadowed because of the incredibly rude staff. The cashier made no attempt at hospitality and rolled his eyes at every question. I will not be returning, and I will not recommend this restaurant.
