How NOT To Treat the Customers. Restaurant reviews are not all about the food. Restaurants today nourish the soul as well as the appetite. They have become destinations for entertainment and social networking. The Del Ray Taqueria Poblano is a small, quirky establishment In the tight-knit community of Alexandria. I am a regular customer. The waiters know my order. My uncle died suddenly yesterday. Thought some friendly faces and Mexican comfort food would soothe my broken heart. We arrived to find the usual crowd waiting for far too few tables. It was hot and they were not seating outside, making getting a table harder still. I was told 20 minutes. Fine. After waiting forty minutes in 95-degre heat I came inside to wait. The manager and staff began to seat parties of two ahead of us. I was feeling faint. No seating to wait. When I inquired about our table and why people who had JUST arrived and not checked in we’re being seated the manager yelled at me……. NO! SEE they are ahead of you. Two women named Edwin?!?!? And my name was at the END of the list. A packed restaurant with people waiting outside and in the doorway and my name is still at the end of the list??????? After 40 minutes!?!?! Not ONE new customer. I DON’T think so!!! The food is best described as California/LA Mexican. It routinely makes the best cheap eats list. So it appeals to families and young groups. The Baja fish taco alone is worth the wait. They serve crispy LA tacos too. Vegetarian option is my favorite, although the last several times they have burned the taco. The Mexican rice is addictive. It has a delicate, fluffy, nutty taste perfectly topped with Poblano chiles. There is a cream sauce that tops the burritos which can be ordered on the side. It tastes terrific on the tacos too. The special dessert offered almost daily is a deep rich chocolate sorbet drenched in Tequilla and topped with candied lime zest. Service is friendly and quick. Mistakes are corrected at warp speed. In all fairness I have to say give it a try.If you don’t mind discriminatory and capricious seating practices and are willing to endure 20 minute waits that turn into 50 for no rightful reason…….. Go for it! I was yelled at by the manager when all I said was that I was not feeling well and would have to leave after he seated five parties ahead of me.Next time I will faint instead of excusing myself and letting him know we had to go.Then again……… I won’t be back!
Not worth considering…. If you are a fan of beans and guacamole from a can, this is your spot! not worth the time and definitely overpriced! I didn’t know it was so expensive to open up a can and chop some lettuce…in case it’s not clear yet…stay away.
Cal-mex, I see why they call it that. It is a pretty comfortable environment with slightly loud colorful decor. Perfectly suitable for a quick lunch or a lively dinner. The food was pretty darn good. I had the tacos, the true test of any Mex, Tex restaurant and they were pretty tasty. Mexican tacos are typically about fresh, minimalist ingredients such as corn tortillas, meat, cilantro, onion, and perhaps a few radishes on the side. Tex-Mex tends to be more about putting on beans, lettuce, tomatoes and lots of cheese; Not my favorite but very typical of the DC area. So the tacos weren’t typical Mexican or Tex-Mex so I guess that is why they call it Cal-Mex; Regardless, it works for me. I found it to be a tad bit pricier than I feel Mex.-type food should be but all in all, I had a good experience.
