I don’t really understand the hype. I’ve been to this place twice and I just don’t get how this winds up at the top of the list for ‘great places to eat’ in the area. The sandwiches are ‘eh’. They’re small, basic, and lacking in anything special. And you can get better BBQ at a lot of other places. The ice cream is about the same. It’s okay, but nothing great. We’ve tried cones and sundaes and they’re good, but nothing great. Definitely better than Dairy Queen, but most places are better than that. The things that are special about this place are the cones and the history. They do make the best, freshest cones I’ve tasted outside the NJ boardwalk. You can buy them by the ‘jug’, which I did as a gift for my mother (from Philly and we spent our summers on the NJ boardwalk- it brought back memories). Otherwise, I think the novelty of the place is what gives it such good ratings. I’m really glad this place exists. I’m just not sure that the quality of the food (alone) keeps it alive. Back in Philly, we have some places like this that exist because their burgers or sodas or milkshakes are the best. This just doesn’t have that quality. But it does have a history and that’s important, too. I wish this place had awesome burgers and shakes- it might make it worth the toll to visit. Unfortunately, paying $2.50 for a novelty burger isn’t really worth it, so we stay on our side of the water. The tolls vs quality of food keep us from taking our visitors there, too. (Yet another example of how tolls have affected people).

BBQ, Fries, Limeade. Sandwich is just the right size and very tasty. Unique tasting BBQ sauce is available. Thick tasty fries, outstanding limeade squeezed right there.

Take a trip back in time! So Nostalgic! Doumar’s is one of the 1st doughnut makers in America. They STILL use sticks to flip them over. Melted goodness!

Good ‘Q, Cool Place. A vinegary, kinda messy sandwich but good. Not quite what I’d call East NC, but close enough for NoFo. The curb service is a great feature.

The Bomb. Throwback to the 60’s. Love the crinkle-cut fries and the BBQ sandwich. You gotta get a t-shirt too.

This is the real deal! North Carolina BBQ with great sides and real ice cream cones. Make the trip!

I’ve tried to like this place but I can’t. Ho Hum. Highly over-rated. The food is bland, nothing special.
