This place is growing on me. I didn’t think the food or value was anything special after my first visit, but I intended to return and give it another shot. Well I have subsequently returned and had a great experience. The waitress said that they really stand by their specials so that’s what I went with. I ordered their flat-iron steak topped with caramelized red onions and it was fantastic. The she-crab soup has been good and creamy every time I’ve had it. I really like the atmosphere and decor of the place too. I have to say that the server did an excellent job handling my party of 13 and all the food came out to the table at about the same time. I still want to return and try other things on the menu and I will certainly keep this place in mind the next time I plan for a dinner out in Norfolk.
Very disappointed. Heard about how great this place was. Meh. Food was pedestrian at best, wine list was dreadful, service was slow even though it was 3/4 empty. Ambiance was that of a bad wedding hall.
Not worth it. Went there for my first time & got a Cesar salad and you could taste the anchovies! And then got a seafood platter and everything on the platter was overly seasoned with old bay! Not worth the money at all, such a disappointment
Great Experience. Was visiting Norfolk for the NATO parade my wife and I had lunch at the Freemason Abbey The she crab soup was the best. Get the 1/2 sandwich and soup. Great value and taste.
Went here with my wife for Valentines Day and really enjoyed the entire evening! Getting the reservation was tricky because their online system showed no tables available the entire evening but when I called they had no problem finding a table. They created a special menu insert just for Valentines Day and we ordered mostly from it. We had the She Crab soup and Freemason Abby Onion soup plus some fried oysters, and shared some Fried Green Tomatoes with the other couple. All of it tasted great and u especially liked the tomatoes. I ordered the 16oz King Cut Ribeye and had it cooked medium. They cooked it exactly how I ordered it and served it on a bed of smashed potatoes – what a great combination! My wife had the Lobster and Chicken dish, an interesting combination but one they did very well – no left-overs here! We finished the night with a Chocolate Moose cake that melted in your mouth and a Goat Cheese Raspberry Cheesecake that rivaled the best New York style cheesecake. Our waiter, David, really knew the menu and pleasantly presented it to us as well as keeping tabs on our beverages. Several others on the staff stopped by during the evening to check on us as well. The lighting and noise level were appropriate even for having a table instead of a booth. Overall, we had a very pleasant experience and will definitely come back here for another special occasion!

My husband and I had dinner here recently and were pleasantly surprised with food quality, service, and overall ambiance of the restaurant. Prime rib was excellent and catfish was perfectly cooked. We were seated right away and food arrived in a timely manner. Service was wonderful as well. Absolutely no complaints whatsoever. Loved the building – very unique.
