Pricey But Delicious. I had a really nice dinner with a friend here last Friday evening. We arrived about 7pm as a walk up and had no problem getting a table. The restaurant was dimly lit however it has character and for the most part I liked the look, however as another review put it, some of it does need some touching up.I ordered a rum & coke while my friend ordered herself a lemon drop and we started to look at the menu. We decided to skip on the app’s as we’re both had our fill of seafood lately and went straight to ordering the entree’s. She ordered the Long Island Duck Breast and I selected the Pan Seared Pork Chop. Not long after our meals arrived and looked great. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love it when a restaurant goes out of it’s way to make food look good as well as taste good. My plate included a large pork chop, roasted Brussels spouts and small skillet full artisanal macaroni and cheese. It smelled divine and tasted even better. My dates plate was also exceptionally filled with slice’s of duck breast as well as an apple, fennel and sweet potato hash topped with an egg sunny side up and balsamic reduction. I had a slice of the duck and it was delicious. We skipped desert as we had decided to take a walk on Colley Ave first. All in all an excellent meal and I’ll be back for sure.

Good, but . . .. The Green Onion is awkward. Too expensive to be a regular place for us. Not special enough for special occasions. To be sure, we have had some very good food there. They have a particularly good cheese board presentation, good drinks and good deserts. Have always enjoyed the salads. The entrees have sometimes been quite good. I don’t understand the complaint about fat on meat. Good meat has fat; there is nothing worse than a hunk of lean pork. I’ve never had anyone be rude there. I don’t mind that they charge a nominal fee for good bread and delicious flavored butter. And I don’t even mind if they take a long time getting the food to the table (which I don’t think has happened to us). If the conversation is good enough, and you have a drink, you won’t notice. But at the end of the day, we’d rather spend $30-50 on dinner than $75-100, and there plenty of places that serve up good food for $50. So, we go once in a while and always find something to enjoy.

The Beast. This weekend I went to The Green Onion on Colley Ave in Norfolk for Sunday Brunch (3/3/13). A month ago we went and had a horrible experience. The service was great, food took forever and was atrocious! Leslie was very sweet and an older server/ supervisor came over and addressed our problems,… so we went back. This time the supervisor waited on us (can’t remember name). They were out of biscuits but she suggested alternatives that worked out well. The food and service were great. BUT while we were finishing our pitcher of Sangria a heavy set brunette waitress came into work and apparently began to order and push everyone around. It got so bad she told one young waiter at the tops of her lungs so that everyone in the dining-room could hear that he was no longer to work brunch and that he was too incompetent to be there. She was so pushy and mean to her co-workers,….That if we hadn’t already eaten and paid we would have walked out. Will we go back? Yes, but we will walk right out if we see that woman.

Been going here for years, and only a couple of times have we had even a so-so experience. Unfortunately this was one of those times. Went last week for our anniversary. Service was wonderful as usual, and our server recommended a great wine for us. But we got lost the moment she started rattling off a LAUNDRY LIST of menu changes and specials. We got a little lost, but I ended up ordering the new filet mignon and he ordered the pork that he is a huge fan of. I guess the pork was one of the changes we missed when our server listed them, because instead of the braised pork it was a chop. And while it was a gorgeous chop, it was way too well done for him and quite dry. My filet was cooked perfectly, albeit the sauce and potatoes were a little too salty. Another thing that was lacking was presentation…it was kinda ‘blah’ looking…no effort put into garnishing or plating. I personally like a colorful plate, but this was kinda boring…I miss the gorgeous food of the onion! But we will of course come again, and hopefully next time everything will be listed on the menu, and they’ll be a little more creative too!
