The chili here was surprisingly good. I ordered a Texas BBQ Pulled Pork Cheeseburger and replaced fries with a bowl of chili as my side. The burger wasn’t bad and everything on it seemed fresh. Now, pulled pork BBQ is not a Texas thing, so I don’t know why the burger is named as it is, but despite the misnomer I ordered it anyway and it was better than an average fast food burger. Again, the chili was really good and was topped with cheese and onions. I wished I’d ordered a bigger bowl of it. One of my dining companions also commented on how good the chili was. The restaurant itself is styled as a 1950s diner and they serve shakes and floats and everyone is dressed in white diner attire. If you need a quick bite before a show at the NorVa as I did, I’d say this is a good place for that.
While shopping during lunch time at the MacArthur mall in Norfolk, VA (they still have malls?), we decided to get something to eat. I hadnt been to the food court in years. Numerous new and inviting eateries appeared on the second level of the mall. One place popped right up at us as we came off the elevator: Johnny Rockets, a hamburger, fries and fast food joint with a dcor from the 1950s. I ordered and enjoyed my Spicy Southern Smoke House Double, while my grubbing partner loved her Bean-less Chili. Whatever you do, dont play the computer game thats on your table thinking its free; they will deceptively charge you $2!!! The food was fine but the booth was tight. I would return if I were in the area, but I wont go looking for the place.
Good food, but so so service.. Johnny Rockets is located on the 2nd floor of MacArthur center right outside of the main elevators. The restaurant is designed sort of like an old 50’s diner. They even have those old mini flip jukebox stands at each table and along the counter space. The only thing missing is roller skates on the waitresses. We stopped in for lunch this afternoon before going to the movies and were seated immediately right at the counter inside the door. I’d say the place was about half full. Our waitress dropped off the menu and we didn’t see her again for almost 10 minutes. When she eventually came back by she took our drink orders and was gone again. Finally she asked if we were ready to order, of course we were.Roughly 10-12 minutes later our food arrived. We had both ordered a single patty version of a burger called The Smoke House. The burger comes with the following, cheddar cheese, applewood smoked bacon, a large onion ring or two & BBQ sauce. At first glance I didn’t think it was a very big meal. Their were barely any fries (see pic) and the burger was wrapped in paper. Looks can be deceiving though and once the burger was unwrapped it was a monster. It was very filling and delicious burger indeed. All in all we were very happy with our meal, just not our delinquent waitress. I won’t hold that against the restaurant though and will definitely return at a future time.
What a disappointment. Don’t eat here. The food takes forever to arrive. The burgers are paper thin and flavorless. Johnny Rockets tries to disguise the paltry quantity of beef its burgers offer beneath an otherwise unnecessary pile of toppings, the most offensive of which is relish. You’ll be better off at Five Guys or even Wendy’s. Now to figure out what to do about this stomach ache and the nasty taste left in my mouth.
Horrors upon horrors. You know what’s better than paying $6 for a Wendy’s-caliber burger (no drink or fries included)? Having to fear that a restaurant’s employees will break out into a song-and-dance routine while preparing it for you.
