I recently went to a dinner tasting at Kappo Nara Ramen and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I took a seat and ordered a warm Plum Sake. Our sampling consisted of 4 dishes. Mini courses if you will. First go round we were served a plate with Tako-Yaki (Deep fried octopus balls) and Edamame. To describe the Tako-Yaki better, it was more like a very light hush puppy that was stuffed with octopus. They also had a bit of sauce on them that accented the taste of the Tako-Yaki nicely. Between the first and second courses we ordered drinks. I ordered a small Plum Sake which is a hot sake topped with Plum wine. This was the perfect drink for our dinner. About the time my Sake arrived so was the second course. This dish included Kurobuta Sausages and Chashu Bao. The Kurobuta are Japanese sausages. They had a great taste and were my favorite item of the night. The Chashu Bao was like a finger sandwich. Inside the folded bun was chashu pork, sauce and scallions. The bread used for this is very unique. Our third course was our Ramen bowl. This was a curry based pork broth full of ramen noodles, egg & scallions. This was a delicious bowl and I really enjoyed the broth. I can imagine having this or something similar regularly on a cold winter day. Last but not least was our dessert round. I’ll be honest at first I didn’t know what they heck they had put in front of me. It sorta looked like a Popsicle and was called Banana Taro White Chocolate. In actuality it was a half of a banana on a stick that had been dipped in white chocolate with taro in it then frozen. Then it was topped with some colored sprinkles and a small Japanese style animal cracker. This was my second favorite item of the night. What a simple yet delicious treat.During desert the owner Angel spoke to us and provided a history of restaurant and how her and her mother bought it from the retiring founder several years ago and their trek to bring Ramen south of DC. They have a second Kappo Nara Ramen in Providence Shopping center in Virginia Beach and they’re entertaining the thought of opening a third location (hopefully in Greenbrier so I can go for lunch hint hint wink nudge) in the future. I can’t end this review without saying that the staff really gave 150% percent last night. The first thing I noticed was they were all sporting the same Japanese hair style. They had a lot to take care of and handled it like seasoned pros. They were exceptional so bravo to them. Great job!I can’t wait to come here again!
