Cafe De Bangkok. Tried this place when it opened and again recently. The food was consistently bad. The recipes are bizarre and bland, the prices are absurd. The bubble tea is an unusual slush and the taste is nothing special. This place needs a new head chef and completely new menu. I will not be returning.
Not great Thai. My favorite food is Thai but this place isn’t great. Everything I’ve eaten there has been just ok- particularly their curried dishes and appetizers. Their version of pad thai is tomato based-and not good enough to make me want to eat it again. They have the bubble teas and outdoor seating areas but I haven’t been back after trying it a couple times.
Great Thai Food. It’s my favourite Thai food place in Bburg. The one at the University city Blvd is a joke. Food at Cafe De Bangkok is hot and spicy, just as I like it, the servers are friendly and communicative. I love their bubble tea!
Worst Thai restaurant on earth. I came here thinking I would get good old Thai food,( panang, basil, Tom yum). Instead I was surprized when I sipped the Tom yum. It was sweet!!!! On what world is Tom Yum Sweet? Any way my main dish was panang curry, which also, I think was an abomination. I felt I was just tasting pure coconut milk. It looked like an orange goop, lacking in any meaningful ingredients. The only things I saw were cubes of chicken, and a floating red pepper. The only thing that I thought was half way decent was something called tropical rice(something like that). My advice for people trying to run fake authentic restaurants, at least make the names authentic!!Ultimately I was disappointed with the food. The decoration, jazz music and the waiters were nice though… but it makes you wish for the good old Thai restaurant where the waiters are rude, the decorations are drab, and the music is authentic.
Friendly Staff, Below Average Food. The staff is super nice. Unfortunately, my first experience here is my last experience. I do not plan to return nor do I plan to recommend this restaurant to anyone. Overall, I got the sense that there is no pride to be found in this restaurant. There is no care to create a pleasant ambiance in the restaurant. There is no care in how food is presented to the customer. I’ve been to Thai restaurants where the food not only tasted great but was beautiful to look at. Not so here. What you get on the plate and how much an item costs is terribly mismatched. The amount of protein afforded to the customer in protein dishes is negligible. If I order a chicken or beef dish, I expect to get at least an equivalent of a large chicken breast. Not so here. While their curries were pretty good, the spring rolls that I received were oily, a bit over-fried, and tasteless. Even the sweet sauce on the side tasted watered down. Blacksburg is in need of a stable, consistently good Thai restaurant. If this place could get a consistently talented chef, maybe this place can be a serious staple.
Overpriced and not authentic. Charge heavily for meat and add very little to the dishes.
That’ll do, Thai joint. That’ll do.. Cafe de Bangkok is more Los Angeles-style Asian fusion than authentic Thai food, but the New River Valley area has recently played host to three other, more authentic Thai restaurants that have since gone out of business. I guess there’ll little to be said for authenticity in small Southern college towns. Cafe de Bangkok’s quality has been highly variable during the time it’s been in operation (which you can see from the quality of the reviews). This seems to have a lot to do with the quality of the cooks and wait staff, which has definitely varied. It’s not clear to me if management has changed hands. Suffice to say that from 2006 through about 2008, Cafe de Bangkok offered consistently tasty, three-to-four star food. Something happened in 2009 that tanked the food quality down to one to two stars throughout the year. So how is it in 2010? Well, more like it was when the restaurant opened. The portions are a bit smaller but you’re getting more competently made curries, fresh vegetables, and fragrant rice. Outright rotten or burnt food doesn’t seem to make it out of the kitchen now. This review is based on a take-out order of the Bangkok Rice Wok, Ruby Curry with Chicken, and Massaman Curry with Tofu. I’ve had some pretty sad excuses for Massaman Curry in the NRV, but Cafe de Bangkok’s was highly acceptable, with good soft potatoes and a nice thick, hot curry sauce that had the distinct nutty flavor of a Massaman Curry. The Ruby Curry and Rice Wok were also tasty if, obviously, very simple dishes. As Thai food goes, this is definitely better and more authentic than the average cook could easily manage at home, which is my usual standard for regional cuisine restaurants in this area. I have had better on the West Coast, naturally, but all the NRV restaurants that served better Thai are long gone. Cafe de Bangkok: good enough for now.
