For the life of me I can’t figure out why people love this place so much. I’ve had lunch here multiple times, as well as breakfast. My rock hard biscuits seriously discourage me from visiting again in the morning. The lunches I’ve had have been underwhelming, and what passes for barbecue sauce here feels sad. It’s thin and low on flavor. But hey, everyone else seems to love it. Maybe I’m being overly critical because my expectations were set too high.
Best BBQ and Super Fun Sandwiches!. Zach and crew put their heart and soul into serving up fantastic BBQ and awesome sandwiches. Anything they put on a biscuit is fabulous and the ODB is quickly becoming the best sandwich in Cville. Their smoky, moist BBQ needs no sauce (the true test of legit BBQ), but they offer NC and other sauces that are all outstanding. The wait can be long, so go early. It’s WELL worth it!
Best barbecue and charcuterie to be found in the city limits. There is a lot of love in this food and it is obviously crafted with great consideration.
I ordered the fried chicken, my mistake, who goes to a BBQ place and gets chicken. Very brown and dry; so gross. I wanted the ribs but the were out of a full rack. But the most amazing fried green tomatoes I’ve every had get the pimento cheese it was good to. So I’ll have to go again and get ribs and biscuits. Willing to give it another try.
Hash vs real BBQ. First of all , I love this place! I like the idea and the little family story, all great! The food taste good. The first thing that hit me is that the pull pork was brown I did see some bits of bark and some little chunks of fat. The brown baffled me because fresh pulled pork is pink and healthy color of white. I then realize the meat is probably frozen or at least cooked a couple days ahead, hence the very small pieces of pork. The brown color is from reheating on the griddle! I notice the food is very reseasoned.and hides some of the smokey flavor but still good. I realize this is more of a hashed vs real Bbq .The service is great! The atmosphere is excellent!. I liked the non traditional bbq menu!. I enjoyed the whole experience. When it’s all said and done ,it’s about making customers happy and making money! I like that its creating a following! I am a fan ! Biscuit was the bomb and loved the fries! Pickle was cool! I told them to pick their best sauce and they did! If you are looking for fresh pull pork off the smoker this not that! But if you re looking for good food and something trendy, this is great! Also , I did notice no smell of that great oak wood a burning! Just saying.Be real! The BBQ snob!
A deadly delicious combination. You know those beer, bourbon and bbq festivals that happen up and down the east coast? If they added these biscuit sandwiches to the mix, time would stand still. At 1:20 on a mid-June Saturday I had the good fortune of stopping in this little shop and promptly had what my friend describes as a food-gasm. – – For only $6, a decadent and simply composed breakfast sandwich was delivered to me in a wooden bowl oak smoked pulled pork, a fried over-easy egg and smoked pimiento cheese. My dining partner had another biscuit sandwich southern breakfast sausage, pepper jack cheese and scrambled eggs. Next visit I will most certainly try the Ol Dirty Biscuit fried chicken, sausage gravy, dill pickles and smoked pimiento cheese. Mainly a spot for meat-eaters, but vegetarians can get fried green tomato. – – This seems to be the kind of place that could annihilate with a food truck, which I am confident I would follow around like a lost puppy, if it actually existed in that form. During peak hours I can imagine there being a line, but the service is very fast and completely worth any wait. The sauces for their bbq sound delicious and they have both Cheerwine and limeade available to drink! Only 10-15 seats inside and a couple of picnic tables outside, but they do package to go. This place is a true touch of southern goodness!
Where?. I asked the owner where he learned to cook BBQ like that. He reported that he’d watched his dad while he was growing up because his dad was always barbecuing. Then he experimented on his own until he found what works. He’s self taught. He said that not a day passes without some well-meaning customer offering some free advice. His wife and two sweet, beautiful kids were there, waiting for daddy to get through his shift. She, gnawing on a pulled pork sandwich, nodded respectfully when he remembered that he came home most afternoons (he closes at three so he won’t run out of supply) to report all the free advice he’d received through the day. He takes little of it. I advised him to ignore all advice. He’s found an essential edge. The ribs my wife, The Muse, ordered were perfectly, and I mean perfectly, done, and meaty beyond belief. A lunch order was eight bucks, which seemed to be more than a pound of ribs, which sells for a lot more when ordered by the pound. Sauces, thoughtfully made, spiced everything we ordered. Fresh (did I mention fresh?) potato fries. Egg-laced buns that stand up to dipping in sauce. Fried green tomatoes in a pickle remoulade: perfect. Where did he learn how to do this? He obviously taught himself. Nobody can tell anyone how to do anything. Anything requires some interest and engagement to pick and choose, then integrate. This guy’s done that. Go. Have a decent meal. Marvel at the small wonders decent food entails. Tell everyone you know about the experience. Everyone prospers.
