Steak from Walmart? Maybe!. Ordered the Trout and a New York strip on Jan18th 2015. Steak was probably the second worst steak I have ever eaten. Dry, over cooked, extremely low quality meat just thrown on top of a layer of balsamic vinegar and dirty arugula piled on top. I honestly have had better steaks for $10 at Applebee’s. Wow expected more after reading all the reviews. Did C and O hire college students to write reviews? My meal was close to $100, no drinks just water and to top off an already unsatisfactory meal the dessert I ordered ,cream brle, was just cold canned pudding with white sugar melted on top definitely not homemade with quality ingredients, yuck!I thought about returning the steak but it was so awful I just bit my lip drank water and chewed endlessly until I suffered through it. I would not eat at C and O again if my meal was free. Too many reviews focus on the old quaint historic building and getting drinks downstairs. For meals at this price point I expect high quality ingredients, made fresh, and checked by a chef before it is thrown on my table. You have been warned! If you would like to have a nice evening being disrespected by an owner who could care less about customers or food go to C and O. I left feeling like I received a speeding ticket, during a recession, from a sherriffs department short on funds even though I was not speeding. I don’t think I’ll be able to eat a steak for awhile, probably be spending the next two days shivering on the commode on an unexpected weight loss event anyway. I may have just had my first meat glue steak, thanks C and O!
Phenomenal food. Everything I’ve tried there is layered with flavor–from appetizers through entrees to dessert! Exceptional service. A purely enjoyable dining experience! Expensive for me, but worth it on rare occasion.
Take This Into Account:. I used to cook & do dishes n’ such at the C&O back in the 80’s, and I have never stopped going there at least 4 or 5 times a year. At least. Great drinks, great food, great service, great atmosphere. Wallet-deMOLishing wine cellar for the 1%. Elaine the sommelier is in the 1% of great people on planet Earth. If only the nightclub was still open…First timers, get Steak Chinoise & a house salad afterwards. Sweetbreads are always a good app (if you eat sweetbreads.) Not together though (too much cream.)Late night menu-wise, the veg soup is classic, cheese plates feed 2 w/ bread, and the quiche is tasty.
Consistently Great. Had dinner on the patio of C&O last night and this place continues to be a favorite of ours. Attentive but not overbearing service, great food, and upscale without being pretentious. Two words: Steak Chinoise!
Can’t complain about the food, BUT…. The food here is way too overpriced. I can’t complain about the food – there was nothing wrong with it. But there are so many places around town with better food and that are 1/3 of the price. Skip this place!
Great Atmosphere, food now up to par. The atmosphere at C & O is awesome if you don’t mind the somewhat cramped space. I’ve had a number of mediocre dinners here in the past couple years, but my most recent visit was fantastic. One of the best meals I’ve had. I think Dean Maupin is now the Chef and has brought the food back up to an excellent level. Definitely recommend hanging out at the bar downstairs, cool place.
One of the best restaurants in Charlottesville. French inspired American with a great atmosphere.
