I forgot to add to last review- the manager came and checked on us and chatted with us several times throughout the meal. We had no idea she was the manager until we were leaving- she was so very friendly and helpful!!01 Mar, 2015Avid beer lovers from Richmond, we chose South Street tonight over our home-away-from-home favorite Blue Mountain, just to try something new. We had to wait a little while for a table, but the reason we were waiting was obvious: the beer was amazing, the servers and bartenders all seemed to genuinely enjoy helping people, and the food was unique and very tasty. While we were hanging out near the bar, waiting for a table, my husband and I commented several times on how much friendlier the waitstaff and bartenders were at South Street in comparison to brewpubs in our hometown. Most importantly, the beer was simply delicious. We will definitely be returning!!
I have really been looking forward to the re-opening of South Street so we went last night for their soft opening. Unfortunately, after taking arguably the best food item off the menu (soft pretzel), hiking up the prices (who charges $17 for fish and chips??), getting rid of the cozy rustic ambiance with the increased lighting and uncomfortable modern seating, and sub-par service, I’m sad to say South Street went from being my favorite spot in Charlottesville to one of my least favorites. The beer, however, was much improved so that was a plus. I may come back in a month once things have settled to give it another shot but that’s really only because we loved South Street so much before and hope it brings back some of its old character. Two star justification: one for the good beer and the other is really only because we liked it so much before they rebranded do I’m not sure how much that even counts…
The food was good. It didn’t make up for the lack of attentive service however. We arrived at 4:30pm after the UVA game.. It wasn’t crowded. Maybe 5 tables and 6 people at the large bar. We sat at the bar to eat and drink. The bartenders we’re less than friendly , unattentive. With a large bar not being busy.. We waited 15 minutes before we were able to ask a out the beer.. Then another 20 minutes we had to ask for food menus because they were never even offered. Then another 20 to order/ask questions. The bartender Veronica seemed bothered by anyone asking for assistance. As the evening went on, the restaurant filled with the dinner crowd- 7:30/8pm and we watched interactions between patrons and the bar staff, there was no sense of urgency period.. For the service bar or the customers right infront of them. Recommendation- get the wait staff who seem to have personality and energy behind your bar bc the bar staff lacks it.
Disappointed. I had their nachos which was good but this brewery has the worst beer I ever had. I had different beer each time I went there and I just didn’t like any of them. I could easily say that Yuengling is much superior then any beer they have over there.
I did not like this place. It does not have free wifi, and it is not kid friendly at all. Don’t go here.
The atmosphere is great, copper topped bar, great home brewed beers. I highly reccomend the Satans Pony amber ale!
It was a fun place
