Soviet Turkish. I went here with a couple of friends because I couldn’t figure out which were the _real_ reviews here and well, also simply to try. Short answer – this is not Turkish food but a close approximation. My friends from Charlottesville were very happy with the food but for me it didn’t approach homemade let alone greatness. The tabbouleh was soggy and all couscous – obviously more then a day old, and my Iskender kebab had some kind of commercial gyro meat rather than the real deal. Bread was acceptable but the aiyran was nearly undrinkable. The apple tea was done right, very sweet. I recommend you try other places first unless you’re really hurting for Turkish food and stuck for options. To the people complaining about the unsmiling waiters (really? This is an issue), the reason is probably because the family like most Turks in the region according to the Kyrgyz friend I went with, are Turks from the former Soviet Union, ie Turkestan. The American culture of smiling all the time is generally seen as unserious, silly, non-adult. So it’s an authentic place in a way! I found our guy competent and fine.
Can’t get enough of this place. Having lived in Cville for almost a year now, I have tried a LOT of restaurants, not all, but a lot. Cville has a lot of restaurants but they are not always consistent and not always tasty.I was so happy when a friend of mine took me to Sultan Kebab for the first time…and I go on a weekly basis for their lentil soup, perfectly seasoned and cooked chicken kebabs, baked hummus, kisir (Turkish tabouleh), bread, apple tea!, aegean salad, rice pudding (even though I’m lactose intolerant), lahmacun (Turkish pizza), and of course the Turkish coffee. I’ve read the negative feedback and I think that a lot of this is a case of misunderstanding. The waiter is not angry, but a serious Turkish man. I usually find myself cold in movie theatres but never in SK. I will admit that I’m a huge fan of Turkey and Turkish culture and have been there many times so I really appreciate the authenticity of this place. I took my parents to SK when they came to visit, and they have heard me go on and on about Turkey, and after this visit, I can tell you that after the great food and warm service we received, they are asking me when I can take them to Turkey proper. For those who are opposed to this place, perhaps give it another chance with an open heart and mind. Life is good, enjoy the good food and company…it’s definitely at SK.On a final note, this place is EXTREMELY CLEAN.
