Good traditional sushi. I recently relocated to the Charlottesville area from New York, and I’ve been on the lookout for a good sushi restaurant. Tokyo Rose is the real deal. The fish is traditionally prepared by an authentic sushi chef. The pieces are not the giant slabs that have become familiar, but the traditional human-sized portions. There are two pieces to each sushi a la carte order, which is also the way sushi was traditionally sold. The fish is high-quality and fresh, although their toro was disappointing. Yellowtail and mackerel were excellent, and the uni was extremely good and fresh. The staff is efficient and friendly for the most part. One thing that separates the real sushi places from the pack is the quality of the rice — and the rice at Tokyo Rose is quite good.

A call less civil.. I called Tokyo Rose and attempted to ask the lady if they made or knew how to make Japanese-Hawaiian style Poke. Immediately, the lady becomes irritated and curt. I tried to explain what I was asking for. I said the main ingredient is Ahi and she said she hasn’t got her order of pufferfish in yet. I said I meant to say Tuna, and again she said her pufferfish had not come in yet, as it arrives on Friday. There is some barrier here, but her English seems at least as good as mine, so I continue to try.I then tried to explain how Poke is made using the ingredients, and she interrupted me to tell me they do not cook their fish. Once again I tried to explain that it is not a cooked dish, but she again interrupted and said she does not season her sashimi or sushi.I gave up. One can only put up with rudeness for so long. It’s really not that difficult. I understand it is not on the menu, but to be so rude in her manner was totally uncalled for. I had been interested in trying the restaurant regardless of the availability of Poke, but after that interaction, they can chug Shoyu for all I care. This is one diner who won’t be becoming a customer anytime soon.
