Today after work I definitely needed some time for decompression, and I wasn’t quite ready to tackle traffic. Luckily for me, Boccato Gelato & Espresso is only a few steps away. I’ve been here a year and somehow never managed to make it inside. The outside of the cafe was bustling – with people sitting wherever available – which is understandable because it was such a nice day.Inside it was much more quiet, so I decided to take a seat there. I was surprised to see empanadas in the case, because I had only known they served coffee and gelato.I treated myself to a chorizo empanada filled with beans and rice, and an Affogato with Amaretti gelato. It was my first time having an affogato – which was like an adult version of a root beer float. It was rich with delicate flavors – and it totally took the edge off. It was easy to sit and relax at Boccato, it was an intimate setting with rustic decor. It had a quaint DIY feel – which I enjoyed, and the sunlight really made it feel open. I honestly didn’t expect the empanada to be good, because it’s a gelato shop – but it was everything you would want one to be. It was mildly spicy, had great texture, and was moist so you didn’t need any sauce. The best part – you can eat it with one hand.Time flies when you’re relaxing, and next thing you know I had been there for almost two hours. When I looked around, I realized that everyone that had been there when I arrived was still there. It’s hard to find a cafe that makes you feel like your sitting in your own living room – but Boccato more than manages that. I look forward to more decompression time at Boccato Gelato & Espresso.

Turn off the fluorescent overhead lights – otherwise, great place!!. . . . a friendly, unique place for coffee, desserts, etc. with a bohemian atmosphere that would be enhanced if they would turn off the fluorescent overhead lights – they have many soft lamps around on tables that would give enough light and a warm, intimate feel to the room – like a real coffee house. . . .

Was definitely worth the 20 minute wait. Tried cake batter, blood orange and mojito…all great! Mojito had real pieces of mint and was fat free yet creamy and delicious! Friendly staff too.

And Coffee too!. I stopped by Boccato today to discover that they are now selling coffee. And not just any coffee but some of the freshest coffee I’ve ever consumed. I really just wanted to stick my entire head in the container of coffee beans so I could inhale nothing but that amazingly fresh coffee bean smell. Turns out Boccato is brining in only farm direct, single origin coffee beans. And to keep things super fresh, they grind the beans only once you’ve ordered your coffee and pour the freshest cup of coffee you’ve ever had right in front of you. You’ll leave there with a whole new appreciation of coffee.Today they had an Ethiopian Shashamane, a Papua New Guinea, and a Mokha Java on the menu – a nice selection of light, medium, and bold body coffees. Oh, and if you like your coffee really bold, the espresso drinks are made with THREE shots.Don’t forget your cash as Boccato is still a cash-only shop. I promise it’ll be worth every penny.06 Aug, 2008A great addition to Clarendon!. I was so happy to see an independently owned homemade gelato shop open in Clarendon and even more excited once I sampled the goods – and sampled, and sampled. A little afraid of pineapple basil gelato? The staff at Boccato will gladly let you taste all the flavors until you realize you need to buy them all! If exotic flavors are not for you, not to worry, you’ll find something for everyone. While Boccato helps Clarendon keep its unique, eclectic, independent spirit, the charm is not limited to the ambiance of the store or its location. The owners and staff bring a comforting energy to Boccato. They will happily tell you all you ever wanted to know about the shop, the gelato, the flavors, and most anything else you’d like to chat about. You won’t find a friendlier staff in the area.By the way, the gelato and sorbetto flavors rotate frequently, so drop by often to catch a variety of creative and authentic flavors. You won’t be disappointed!(And no, I don’t work at Boccato nor do I own, or have any stake in, the shop – other than my frequent visits.)
