Amazing Mango Mojito and vegetarian tamale. Salsa with the chips is great as well. Medium heat with a bit of smokiness and not too chunky or watery.…

Expensive and gross. I went here with my husband a few weeks ago when we were in town for a court hearing – and I insisted that we find a Mexican place to go have lunch (I had a craving). but honestly I wish I’d picked a different place. now I must say, there were a few nice points about the restaurant, mainly having to do with the atmosphere. the layout was long and a little weird, but they had large windows and a big, dog-friendly patio section – which was nice. the staff members were friendly, also, but that couldn’t outweigh the cons.first, the prices were ridiculous and the portion sizes were laughably small. I’d expect to pay $5 for guacamole, but for that price, I’d expect it to be fresh, which ours wasn’t (it seemed like they took prepackaged stuff and just added some lemon juice and a few tomatoes), and it was spilling out of the 4 oz cup they served it in, which didn’t look good at all. it also came with a tiny portion of semi-stale chips which weren’t even warmed. our waiter never asked us if we wanted extra chips either, though if he had, I would have politely declined.my husband and I both got burritos – he had a steak burro and I opted for the vegetarian burro – but both were horribly overpriced (I paid almost $10 for mine) and they didn’t even come with any sides like rice or salad. they came wrapped in foil and it seemed like they’d been under a heat lamp – perhaps pre-made some time ago and left to stay warm and get stale until we ordered them. the tortillas seemed hard and crusty, not soft or toothsome like they should have been. and the fillings were – well – basically inedible. the rice/beans mix that made up the bulk of the burros were a weird shade of red/brown and they didn’t taste fresh at all, like they’d been made days before and reheated. the rice was mealy and a little off-putting. my husband’s steak was so tough that he actually choked on a piece of it as he was eating (he had to stick a finger down his throat and puke it up on the patio – very embarrassing). as for my veggies – one lonely piece of hard broccoli and a mess of rubbery squash and zucchini – the veggie pieces weren’t cut uniformly, which made the burro itself very difficult to eat since half my fillings were falling out as I tried to take bites. also, the measly portion of cheese they used seemed to have pooled on one side of the burro and gotten hard in the process. only one good point – the salsa was excellent, a great balance of sweet and spicy with a wonderful peppery kick. but we only got a 2-ounce portion and we had to ask for extra when they brought our meals (sorry, but that should have come on the plate to begin with).overall, I can’t recommend this eatery at all. if we weren’t so hungry after court we may have been able to pick a better place – but we’ll know better the next time we’re in the area. for my money, chipotle is a much better option!
Unbeatable chicken soup. Mexicali’s chicken soup can be out of this world. Last night, flattened by the croup and crud, I sent my husband out for a big serving and it was just what the doctor ordered: Steaming hot delectable broth, swimming with loads of big white chicken pieces, carrots, and potatoes. Your mamma couldn’t make it this good. Usually, this soup comes with white rice but this time it was omitted. And that was good. It’s not needed with the potatoes, plus it cuts down on the space allowed for the other goodies. This soup should be a specialty of the house.
AN AWFUL DINING EXPERIENCE. We were there last night, sitting at a table outside, and had a really unusual and bad experience. Seated next to us, was a group of 5 or 6 20-something men, sitting at the end of the seating area in chairs – no table – drinking beers and eating appetizers while listening to their own music on their own music player that they had propped up on a chair. It appeared they’d been there a while because all of their empty bottles were sitting on the ground. The men were talking loudly and their music was conflicting with the restaurant’s music. We asked our server to have the men turn their music off and he seemed to understand and acknowledge our request, but nothing ever happened. Too bad because our food was good. We won’t be returning.
Food and service very disappointing. The iced tea was bitter, the Tamales had about a teaspoon of meat and flautas were soggy! Save your money and avoid this place!29 Jul, 2012Food and service very disappointing. The Tamales had about a teaspoon of meat and flautas were soggy! Save your money go somewhere wher
Nothing to review but the service. Sunday afternoon – it was busy, but the staff didn’t seem overwhelmed.Still, they never got around to taking my order. I left.
Had the big burrito. Bland city. Pretty weak service too. Would definitely not reccomend.
The place is a dump!. The restaurant is dirty, paint is peeling off the walls, tables are chipped, service was terrible, and the food is absolutely tasteless! The only thing I liked was the salsa that came with the chips and my fried yuca. I ended up dipping my yuca in the salsa. I had the enchillada platter, and the beans had a strange taste, the rice was plain and unseasoned, and the enchilladas were subpar. I would never go back nor recommend this place.
