Hands down my favorite Sushi restaurant. I have been a fan of this restaurant for a minimum of 16 years. I cannot remember exactly when I started eating here but I can say I’ve known all three owners and the consistency has remained well above average since my first meal here. The fish they sell is always top grade and compared to even the large restaurants cannot compete with the quality and consistency. The wait staff has been there from the very first day even during the changing of owners and they are friendly and kind to all customers. I have eaten Sushi in many different cities and even countries and this will always be my favorite.
Never been disappointed. My boyfriend and I stumbled upon this place craving Japanese one day. We absolutely love their lunch box specials and I could eat their fried rice for days. The staff is excellent as well, always polite and highly attentive.
The service was amazing and they were incredibly nice. I unfortunately can’t speak so highly about the actual food. Miso soup was good but sushi was ok at best.
My husband and I have been eating here for a few years. One of the best sushi places we have been to. All of the special rolls are excellent. My husband loves the Super Duper roll and I love the Candy Cane and the Salad Rolls. The service is good and they usually throw in an extra roll on the house!
Best sashimi around!. I have tried just about every sushi place in Newport News and this one is by far my favorite. If you like novelty rolls that are all flash and flair, then go to hayashi or soya, but if you want good rolls and sashimi, then sushi yama is the place. Their Tekka ju is AWESOME – Large thick slices of tuna sashimi over seasoned rice! By far the best bang for your buck compared to what you’d get elsewhere. I have ordered chirashi elsewhere which is similar and everyone else skimps on the fish!! I have tried several of their cooked entrees and they are equally fabulous!31 Oct, 2009Excellent sushi! This place has been around a long time and I can see why. Atmosphere is great, the sushi is very fresh! My husband ordered tuna sashimi and it was a dark pinkish red and not fatty at all. We had a tuna appetizer with a spicy sauce and scallions and the chef sent us several samples of other rolls to try on the house several times. I have never been dissatisfied at Sushi Yama, the service is great and while it is a bit pricey, it certainly is worth every penny.
Pretty good sushi. I have eaten here several times, this is not my favorite sushi place but it is pretty good. Not a big fan of their spicy tuna in the past but it has grown on me. I like their bulgogi rolls!! Others seem to enjoy their bowls with chopped sashimi over rice.This is a small restaurant in a strip mall next to a IHOP so parking can sometimes be a pain. Inside they do have a small sushi bar and various tables. Some of my friends really enjoy this place, but I rather visit other local places first but don’t turn it down when they want to go! If you like sushi this place is worth trying, it has been around for a long time.
Sushi Yama = FAIL!! Worse volcano roll I’ve ever had! Dragon roll was mediocre, and the crawfish roll was bland. Definitely not worth the trip or price.
