Brought me back to my time eating softshell crab sandwiches on the Occoquan in my boyhood days. Its hard to find such places like this in Northern Virginia so the fact that this place served it with the crispiest fries ever and the most bounteous decapods and molluscs made me so happy. Everything was well-seasoned where it mattered too. Also, the apple cider vinegar is there to dip te crabmeat in. Try it, its a really interesting and delicious combination just dont drown it in there.
These are the best crabs you’ll find in NoVa, especially in Fairfax County. Yes, crabs are expensive and they will be anywhere you go if you’re looking for good ones. I’ve been coming here with family and friends since the 80’s when the restaurant was still in Merrifield. The jumbos and larges are so full of flavorful meat, I get full after two. The fried oysters are crispy and delicious and oysters and clams on the half shell are fresh, cold and super tasty. Even the chicken fingers are hot, crispy and cooked to moist perfection. We go for every family birthday and holiday. Captain Oell’s brother and younger family members own this amazing place and work very hard. The care very much about the customers but are also always packed, don’t mistake trying to get everyone taken care of quickly for snobbiness. They are very nice and down to earth. Over all, our favorite place to go during any season, as they get their crabs from wherever they are best, every single day.
The food was good but the price of seafood is getting very expensive. The all you can eat crab special is only for Maryland Blue Crabs which are very hard to crack, disect and clean and do not render very much meat. The Snow and King Crabs are priced by the pound. The service was a little snobby. We arrived around 5:30pm and the entire restaurant was almost empty except for 4 other occupied tables which the hostess insisted on sitting all the tables right next to each other instead of spreading the groups out to give everyone a little privacy and elbow room. When we got up and said we would like to sit on the other side of the room away from the cluster of occupied tables the hostess gave us a very annoyed look and response. Overall the food wasn’t bad but not over the top. At the rate seafood prices are rising I doubt I will return and continue to try/search for other places.
