I was lucky to stumble upon Cafe Natilee during a short business trip to Falls Church VA. Never having been to Northern Virginia, I had precious little time between meetings but no idea where to grab a quick (but GOOD) meal. When traveling for work, I tend to eat terrible food — often resorting to the same fast food joints found in any US city. I didn’t want to eat at Marriott’s pricey in-house hotel restaurant but couldn’t expend the time necessary to launch an exploratory investigation in Falls Church to find good eats. So imagine my delight when I found a fresh bite to eat — as if placed there by the fickle travel gods — in the same plaza as the hotel I was staying in. The location was great for me, but I imagine unfamiliar residents could potentially have difficulty finding Cafe Natilee in the same serendipitous manner…it’s kind of in this bright, open & airy space connecting the hotel to an adjacent office building. At first glance, the menu offers classic cafe/deli/american mainstays, but a closer look reveals the executive chef’s freedom to modernize many tried-and-true entries. With creative inclusion of fresh ingredients and bold flavors, what would have been a decent — albeit familiar — dish transforms into something more. For example, my tasty reuben sandwich went from run-of-the-mill to exciting simply by adding the unexpected creaminess of avocado.Yet the folks at Cafe Natilee were wise enough to limit modern touches only to what would benefit, exhibiting rare self-control to avoid unnecessary re-interpretations that may be perceived as pretentious overkill. The selection of caffeinated drinks and freshly-baked pastries available at the cafe counter was a testament to their ability to successfully navigate the high-stakes balancing act between decorum and innovation.Add an unwavering adherence to local, high-quality ingredients, with the moxie to buck culinary tradition when it benefits a slightly-too-long menu of american dishes, and the result is a trendy cafe with a fresh ethos I wish existed in my city!
