Okay first try, I like it. I tried the new Mario’s in Merrifield today. It’s clean, fairly big and new. I had a Triple steak w/everything…which if your not a Mario’s veteran is onion, slaw, bread & butter pickles, mayo and mustard. The place wasn’t busy, service was friendly and fairly fast. Much the same as in thre original shop, the sub was made to order. The meat was the same fresh rib-eye as the original, the bread and fixin’s the same. There was not as much meat as there was on the one I had in Arlington a couple of weeks ago but it was more than enough. It could have had more mayo, slaw and pickles and I’ll ask next time. The fries were good but need to be salted as soon as they come out of the fryer…they weren’t. Chalk it up to inexperience. All in all though, the sandwich was good, the fries fresh and okay. If they do enough business to keep it open I expect they will improve with a little time. Don’t know about the pizza… didn’t have any. A vist for a little training by Joe and Lefty would do wonders. I’ve been a customer of Mario’s with Joe and Lefty at the Arlington shop since the 70’s and the new location will save some time during the week so I won’t write this place off just yet, it’s okay and might turn out to be pretty good in time.
Best thing since the original. Mario’s is known for their subs. The service in Merrifield is actually better. Sub quality is identical to the original. The amount of meat on their subs is astounding, especially considering their prices. And they’re open till 4am!
Worse than the original. Grade: FWe were surprised to see Mario’s branch out from Arlington and set up shop in Merrifield at Gallows and Lee Highway so we decided to add a stop on our ongoing quest for decent pizza in the area. It appears that the staff pre-bake the crust and sauce, allowing it then to sit until an order comes in. At that point, they add cheese and topings and reintroduce to the oven for a few minutes. I don’t recall if this is how they do it in Arlington, but I was suspicious of the technique. The result was very disappointing. The cheese was applied in overabundance and overwhelmed everything else with a sense of fattiness, especially since the pizza stayed warm only for a couple of minutes. The crust and pepperoni were pretty flavorless and the sauce was overpowered by the cheese. In the end, we threw out the remaining half of our medium pizza. We might decide to try the subs some day but we’ll avoid the pizza.
