I love Battlefield Restaurant! I haven’t had anything from their lunch menu yet, but their breakfast is awesome! I’ve never been disappointed by this place. The service is nice and the atmosphere is cozy, like hanging out with family. Good coffee, the eggs I order are always cooked perfect (over medium or sunny side up), and delicious formed beef hash. My husband and I come here and get stuffed on a good southern breakfast for about $20. Doesn’t get much better than that.

I wanted to like this place, but I just couldn’t! I’d like to warn away other hapless diners away! First of all they don’t accept credit cards which, to me, puts out the expectation that their food will be worth inconvenience (spoiler: it’s not.). No sweet tea, which for a southern place is basically unthinkable. Out of sausage gravy on a Saturday morning-lame! The food that we did get was completely unremarkable (eggs), to bordering on terrible (hashbrowns were cold and flavorless), to downright offensive (they served me a biscuit that was clearly microwaved and had that awful hard plasticy microwaved bread texture. Like I said, I wanted to like the place, the waitresses were very nice (though approximately 75% of them were suffering from meth mouth), and it’s a very cute little diner like place, but it is unpardonably awful!

Southern charm in a roadside diner. There’s a lot of good at the Battlefield, and very little bad. The food is inexpensive, freshly prepared and consistently delicious. The restaurant is often packed full of hungry locals and lucky visitors. The staff are funny, sometimes harried and always willing to help.My experience with the Battlefield Family Restaurant is primarily related to breakfast, where it’s never easy deciding between their massive pancakes, mouth-watering sausage gravy, scrapple, hash and a slew of other breakfast plates. To say I’ve never had a bad breakfast there is an understatement. I’ve never had anything but a great breakfast there.Sitting at the bar makes me feel like Joe Pesci, as I watch the potatoes and pounds of butter meld to make some incredibly delicious home fries. Both shredded (my personal favorite) and cubed potatoes are available, with equally massive doses of butter used to make them.I highly recommend the pancake, and I use the singular advisedly. A short stack (of two) is enough to stymie a grown man, but you’ll never be so happy. My combination breakfast – the number 1 – is the go-to choice for eggs (scrambled), meat (extra crispy bacon), hash browns and a pancake. The best Fredericksburg has to offer for breakfast, in my opinion.
