Another find since moving to Chesapeake. Yumi Yumi can be found tucked into the back corner of Gainsborough Square shopping center on Battlefield Blvd right next to the hospital. I have to say the reviews really built this place up and I was looking forward to going here however I left unimpressed. Let me tell you why.When we walked in there was one person in front of us doing a carry out order. We waited to be acknowledged and eventually just seated ourselves. What became apparent was that the young lady working the register was brand new and didn’t appear to have had any training and she was struggling. Not her fault. She was friendly enough and brought us menus. The restaurant is small and comfy. There are post-it note messages on the walls where previous customers have posted their thoughts and such. I thought it was pretty cool. We ordered our drinks and an appetizer of Lumpia while reviewing the menus. I eventually ordered chicken and broccoli with a side of fried rice and my co-worker had some kind of green curry dish. The Lumpia came out first and only included 3 pieces. It was very good, however I was disappointed with the portion based on it’s price. The sauce with it had some zest and I really enjoyed what little their was.Our entree’s came out a short time later and the food looked great. The problem was the taste. It was off. I wasn’t the only one thinking this and asked my co-worker and he said the same, that his meal tasted odd as well. We discussed it and neither of us felt like it was food contamination from mixed utensils or anything like that. But the meal was off. We each ate about half of our lunches and that was that. Both of use declined carry out boxes. I don’t know what it was, an extra ingredient, or maybe a substitution for something they were out of. The bottom line was the meals taste was off enough that I didn’t enjoy it, and honestly I don’t when or if I’ll return to try it again. Only time will tell.
