A dump. When you leave the resturant you smell like fried food.
Overpriced and tasteless. We recently moved to Richmond and set out to find a new favorite seafood place. THIS IS NOT IT! Very over priced, mediocre food. Had fun at the Midway Bar and Lounge afterwards — will head straight there next time. Do yourself a favor and skip this place.
Too pricey for what you get. Food is ok.
A bit of calabash in Richmond. I’ve had Calabash seafood often, as I love to go down to the Carolina coast for vacation. The best is, of course, at Calabash, NC, just north of the border with SC. Alot of people just don’t get calabash-style, and that’s okay, it isn’t for everyone. It isn’t the healthiest style to be sure, its fried. But, like scotch whiskey, you either love it or hate it. And I’m a lover. Having said that, this restaurant does an acceptable job of providing calabash-style seafood. You don’t go into a calabash restaurant and order lobster, for pete’s sake. That’s just illogical, go to Red Lobster if you want lobster. I think this place nails it. Now, is it as good as a place at Calabash? Nope, I can tell a difference. If you want the real deal, head down to Calabash, NC and you won’t be sorry. But, all in all, I found it to be tasty and well done, with minimal wait, and no b.s. So, yeah, thumbs up!
Go with their strengths. And you won’t be disappointed.Richmond has long had a reputation for mediocre seafood restaurants. Especially lacking among them is good quality Southern style fried seafood. Many seafood lovers like it, in fact prefer it, and having grown up accustomed to it in coastal North Carolina, I count myself among them. There are many restaurants that specialize in nouveau, broiled, upscale, or other types of seafood, and some, notably Bonefish, succeed. But what they fail at, often spectacularly and expensively for the experience, is decent Southern coastal restaurant fried seafood. The fact that Red Lobster is often thought of as a first choice for it locally is somewhat of an inside joke.It is here that Calabash rises above the crowd. It is the *only* restaurant in town that this coastal Carolina seafood fan finds consistent and acceptable to prepare what he is accustomed to enjoying, from the plentiful baskets of hot hushpuppies, good southern style coleslaw, ample and properly breaded fried shrimp, oysters, scallops, fish (usually flounder), and decent fried crabcakes (and not the usual coastal Carolina type that is more bread than crab fried in a shell, but a cake full of good crabmeat; although a little more mustard, paprika and sage in the seasoning would be to my liking but thankfully it isn’t masked with Old Bay!).I have made Calabash my first choice for many years now over any other seafood restaurants in the Richmond area. It is primarily because of the type of seafood I prefer. I look forward to trips to the southern NC coast for good seafood, and Calabash fills that need inbetween. If I was interested in something else, I might pick another location’s more usual non-fried fare. But I doubt I would come away as happy; Calabash always pleases.
Food is okay ( I liked the hushpuppies & the oysters) but it was waaaaaaayyyy too expensive for what you get. I can go to Red Lobster for a much better meal that includes a salad with a nicer environment for a lot less money.
Overpriced and Tasteless. Really expensive and didn’t have much taste. I would rather drive a little ways to Captain Georges in WIlliamsburg, it is worth the drive!
