Delish!. Decided to try when I had a coupon to use and WOW, it was worth every penny and then some! The food was amazingly tasty without being overdone….I had the cabbage rolls and didn’t even need to season. My Mum had the goulash and it was so tasty! I don’t even like mashed potatoes, but tasted hers and they were wonderful…special! Both had the shredded apple streudle for dessert and it was perfect! You just KNOW someobody’s Bosnian grandmother is back in the kitchen cooking up old family faves! We even enjoyed the atmosphere…very family friendly.
We had a great experience at the Balkan! The food was amazing (we had the chicken paprikash, the gyro sandwich, and the baklava), the staff was friendly, it is extremely affordable, and their fresh baked bread is to die for. We will definitely be visiting the Balkan again soon!
Loved it!. I think I found the Balkan by accident. I was in the CVS across the street when I first saw the restaurant. I decided to give it a try after reading some wonderful online reviews. The reviews were accurate. This is one of the best restaurants in the West End. The food is superb, and the service is always delivered with a smile. On one visit we tried the Balkan Mixed Grill platter, which serves 2. It was several different kinds of grilled meats, sausage, and chicken-so delicious, and we had enough to take home for lunch the next day. But the best part is the freshly made Lepinja bread, the Akkawi fried cheese appetizer served with the Avjar, which is a roasted red pepper kind of relish. This is not a restaurant for someone looking for a light meal, or someone who is a vegetarian. This is serious meat and potatoes kind of food, and it is delicious!
Wonderful meal. We had the Schnitzel and t was wonderful. I also recommend the cold meat and cheese appetizer. The Burek was a little dry and could use some additional flavoring. The poached apple dessert was also wonderful!
Not good. Seriously I thought I was reading the wrong reviews so I decided to go back and give this place try #2. I had the same experience as before. Menu is so limited. Tried 4 different items. Didn’t care for any of them. And I love Ethnic food big time and have visited all over the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Will not be going back for 3rd time.
My wife and I recently dined at Balkan on a Saturday evening. To be succinct, our experience was exceptional! Great food, friendly atmosphere, wonderful service, and affordable! Having spent considerable time in Central Europe, I can say this is authentic home cooking. Our new favorite in Richmond!
